💡 Reflecting on last week’s insightful discussions at #MedaWeek23. The 7th Mediterranean Textile Forum delved into the keys to develop the textile sector into a more competitive, value-added, sustainable and knowledge-based industry. These are some of the main takeaways from this great forum: 💬 Enric Carrera Gallissà, Director of INTEXTER UPC and moderator of the session: “One of the most important challenges for the sector is the management of textile waste. For example, in Spain we have 20,000 containers of used clothes on the street. However, only 12% of all that is generated is collected. In addition, there is insufficient infrastructure or resources to sort or separate the collected garments. To which I would add another current problem: two-thirds of the clothes sold in Europe are produced outside. Right now, we can't guarantee that garments that come from abroad meet the same regulatory requirements as those produced in Europe. For example, here we have specific regulations on banned chemicals that are not enforced outside Europe." 💬 Joan Pera, CEO of Arpe Barcelona : “It is essential to analyse the carbon footprint in garments and implement a decarbonisation strategy. The new digital passport, which will give the user information about their carbon footprint, durability and life cycle, will be a great opportunity to make quality products that last longer and pollute less. Apart from this, we should prioritize reuse over recycling.” 💬 Mariona Bonareu , Project Manager at .blacktogrey / Gloria Gubianas Blanes, CEO & Co-Founder of HEMPER HANDMADE : "It's crucial for textile companies to design garments taking into account its life cycle, so that it's reusable for a long time. To do this, it is key that the fabric mix is biodegradable, even if this increases the cost of the product. We should explain well to the consumer why these garments are more expensive." 💬 Ana Rodes, Head of Sustainability at Recover: “Greenwashing confuses consumers. All garment labels are eco-friendly. Exciting Challenge! 👚 🌿 Thrilled to share that I'm diving into the Active Textile Society's research study as a citizen participant, part of the Nordic Textile Collaboration! 🌍👕 Supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers and coordinated by Miljøstyrelsen, this initiative aims to tackle the environmental impact of textile consumption head-on by promoting circularity in the industry. 🔄💡 Through the Active Textile Society's wardrobe study, I'm embarking on a journey to rethink my approach to fashion and textile consumption. For the next period January - June 2024, I've committed to a challenge: refraining from purchasing new clothes. Instead, I'll be exploring and embracing circular business models like repairs, redesigns, resales, and rentals to meet my wardrobe needs. 🛠️👚 This challenge isn't just about personal change; it's about fostering a community-wide shift towards sustainability and circularity. By participating in this initiative, I hope to contribute to valuable insights for companies and fellow citizens alike, paving the way for a more sustainable future in the textile industry. 💼♻️ Has anyone else taken on a clothing challenge? Today marks a major milestone for Australia's clothing industry with the commencement of Seamless operations. At today's event, we were joined by Minister for Environment and Water, The Hon. Tanya Plibersek who reinforced her support for Seamless. When Seamless commences operations on 1 July 2024, 62 responsible brands will be part of the scheme. In addition to the foundation members, new Seamless members announced today included Hanes Brands Australasia , Bianca Spender, Carla Zampatti, ELK, M.J. Bale, Ocean Remedy, OrotonGroup, THE UPSIDE, Universal Store, XTM Performance, Zimmermann and more. Seamless has applied to become a Government accredited scheme via the under the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020, further committing to the highest standards, trust, and confidence for members, partners, industry stakeholders, and consumers. Looking ahead, Seamless will focus on: - Developing better practices, principles and methodologies for circular design. - Further defining the eco-modular criteria to incentivise brands that design garments with natural fibres and safe, recycled content. - Benchmarking current and emerging recycling technologies and sector capability, capacity and capital requirements for the most viable recycling practices in Australia. - Working with stewards and supporters across the clothing value chain on a national collection, sorting and reprocessing program and a support payment scheme for accredited providers.
