Cycling UK has published a five-year strategy, which aims to attract higher engagement in cycling, with the mission statement outlining the elimination of poisonous air pollution, obesity and traffic congestion. Greater Cambridge is still the UK's leading city region for walking and cycling according to the latest #WalkingAndCyclingIndex. A new report published by charity Sustrans in partnership with Greater Cambridge Partnership delves into the active travel habits of residents and explores the benefits along with the measures needed to encourage more people to walk or cycle. In total over 155million walking, cycling and wheeling trips were made in the past year while 56% of people walk five days a week or more, and 45% of residents ride a bike at least once a week. Other findings include that 28% of residents want to drive less, yet 44% of residents often use a car because no other transport options are available. New data from PeopleForBikes finds that England is lagging behind Europe for how cycling-friendly its towns and cities are. England received an average city score of 59 out of 100, compared with an average European city score of 71 when England is excluded. “The uptake of cycling in cities is directly connected to government priorities. This sponsorship deal is one of the largest new sponsorship agreements British Cycling has secured in the past 18 months. Through this sponsorship agreement, Lloyds Bank will become a major sponsor of British Cycling, supporting various cycling events and programs. This includes hosting national cycling events, enhancing educational programs, and promoting cycling within local communities. Both British Cycling and Lloyds Bank share a common mission to support a healthier, more inclusive, and prosperous UK. Jon Dutton, CEO of British Cycling, stated: "In the past 12 months, one-third of UK adults have ridden a bike, and we want to see more people experience the joy of cycling. Through our partnership with Lloyds Bank, we can embark on a journey to provide liberating experiences for families and communities nationwide. We are fully committed to encouraging the nation to move together towards a healthier, more inclusive future." Additionally, Lloyds Bank will support British Cycling's new major event concept recently announced, in addition to sponsoring the Tour of Britain. This new series of events includes international urban cycling festivals and a new national track league concept. Australia recently released it’s 2023 #WeRide Australian Cycling and e-Scooter Economy Report. “The report aims to place a dollar value on the impact on the cycling and e-scooter economy in Australia.” Assessing its 2022 results showcases that there was over a $16 million dollar economic boost, 58,000 jobs were created, and over 2.2M kg of air pollutants were avoided as a result of cyclist's efforts in Australia.
