I recently tuned into "The Daily" podcast by The New York Times, where Sabrina Tavernise discussed the topic "Why Are So Many More Pedestrians Dying in the U.S.?" alongside Emily Badger. Having spent 15 years in road traffic safety, I've delved into numerous statistics regarding traffic fatalities and trends. It's evident that factors like road infrastructure, driving culture, and safety systems vary significantly across countries. Sabrina and Emily highlighted several compelling reasons for the rising pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. since 2009. For actual numbers, refer to the IIHS: [https://lnkd.in/gF4aCqT8]. Some of the reasons they discussed include: - Road designs in the sunbelt prioritizing cars over pedestrians. - The distraction caused by smartphone usage since 2008. - The increase in homelessness, leading to more people on the streets at night. - The usage of automatic transmissions vs manual transmissions, affecting driver engagement and allowing for more smartphone time even in cities. - The prevalence of larger vehicles like SUVs and trucks, leading to more severe injuries. - Among other factors. While I haven't independently verified these causes, they resonate with my intuition and experience in the field. Here are some key thoughts and takeaways: - Technologies like camera-based Driver Monitoring Systems can help drivers stay focused on the road. - Active safety technologies, such as Automatic Emergency Braking for Vulnerable Road Users, can warn drivers, mitigate, or even prevent collisions. - Research on designing car fronts to minimize pedestrian injuries during collisions is available. - Infotainment technologies like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrate phones into cars, allowing for safer usage. - Studies like the “Yerkes-Dodson Law” (Diamond et al., [https://lnkd.in/gcumSuHB]) and “Ironies of Automation” by Lisanne Bainbridge ([https://lnkd.in/gmBEmmH7]) explain how human performance varies with arousal levels, shedding light on the impact of automatic transmission and are a good read for everyone working on SAE Level 2 technology to create reasonable Human Machine Interfaces and Driver Monitoring Systems. In my work with autonomous vehicles, I'm deeply involved in discussions about their safety impact and necessary safety levels. However, I believe the conversation about pedestrian safety and the readily available technologies is more crucial today, as there are simple solutions within our reach. Over the past decade we've seen massive investments in mobility technologies, some of which has driven world-changing innovation and some of which has resulted in massive disappointment. Having ridden the waves of hype and disillusionment, now is the perfect time to revisit the last decade of developments, learn what has worked and what hasn't, and find a constructive vibe for the sector beyond the highs and lows of the hype cycle.
