It's fascinating to observe how many companies fail to recognize the value of certain skills when assessing job applicants. Instead, they often adhere to traditional methods that prioritize educational qualifications over practical experience. In my perspective, if I were hiring a project manager, I would prioritize a candidate with a proven track record of 10 years of successful project management over someone with a strong educational background but lacking real-world experience. While the compensation may differ, I believe that the extensive experience and skills of the seasoned professional would greatly benefit the company. This issue hits close to home for me. With a decade of experience in project management, I've successfully handled multimillion-dollar projects in construction and security infrastructure. However, I find myself being overlooked simply because I lack a specific educational qualification or certification. Everyone thinks they can project manage - and to some degree, it is often true. We project manage life and our social friendship circle. From a career perspective, if you've ever worked in a client facing role - being a multi tasker is something you already do. However, doing the role full time - all day and every day is a skill set that takes guts with no glory. There is no harm done if PM life does not suit ones personality. Most project managers juggle their time between more than one project at any given time. Moreover, most new project manager jobs expect you to know how to manage multiple projects at the same time. Question for Job Recruiters? Why do so many Project Management Jobs require a specific industry experience? After spending time working in Defense, Healthcare, Pharma and SaaS, I've proven that a PM can successfully execute projects across multiple industries. Why then, is the only line that invalidates my application in the job is the first requirements line. Must have Degree in 'xyz'. A project manager is bringing unique disciplines in how to execute a project successfully. Rely on your experts in the specific industry and together the PM and your team will be successful. I hate that I can read a 40 line job description and know I can do 39 of those lines...but fail on the first qualification.

Thoughts of the day: Finding the "perfect" project manager is often considered a myth due to several practical reasons: 1. Unrealistic Expectations: - The concept of a perfect project manager sets an unattainably high bar. No individual can possess every skill and characteristic perfectly. - A project manager might excel in technical skills but might lack in soft skills or vice versa. - Searching for someone who is flawless in every aspect leads to prolonged hiring processes and potentially missing out on highly capable candidates. 2. Diverse Project Needs: - Different projects require different skills and expertise. - Focusing on finding a "perfect" project manager overlooks the importance of matching specific skills and experience to the unique requirements of each project. 3. Team Dynamics and Adaptability: - Success in project management depends on how well the project manager can work with the team and stakeholders. - Hiring a project manager who demonstrates strong adaptability, communication skills, and the ability to integrate well with the team is more practical. In my experience, focusing on finding a competent, adaptable, and culturally fit project manager is more beneficial for achieving project success.

Some years ago I interviewed for a project management job. I had a long conversation with the hiring manager and decided that I'd really rather walk on hot coals than work there. He was nice enough. It was the role that was terrible. - You won't have any contact with the client; that's the account manager's job. - You'll be managing at least a dozen projects simultaneously, likely more. - Your job will be to maintain the schedule, deliver what other people have defined, stay on budget, and report status. - You won't have any influence on project scope or schedule.  - There isn't any career path in the organization for you. For starters, that's not project management. That's an administrative role. Sadly, in many organizations, that's what "project management" has devolved to.  If you're having a hard time finding or keeping talented employees, you need to really look at the jobs you're offering them! Is it a tedious, thankless slog? Are your expectations for workload completely unrealistic? Are titles and salaries completely misaligned with actual roles? Would YOU actually enjoy doing the jobs you're offering others?  If you can't offer great jobs, don't expect great people or great results. 

You can get a project manager job without a certification. You can get a project manager job without a degree. You can get a project manager job in a different industry. But you can't get a project manager job without Experience! There are two ways to get experience ✅ 1. Learn from your experiences. ✅ 2. Learn from other's experiences. Both are equally important.
