Autism acceptance and awareness goes beyond the month of April! "Autistic people deserve to be embraced and valued by our society. Too often, they face misunderstanding, discrimination, and lack of access on all fronts—in education, employment, justice systems, and community life. True inclusion means creating environments where diverse needs are accommodated, allowing people with autism to thrive as their authentic selves." I love how SD is Breaking Free from Labels: Spectrum Designs in Pleasantville leads the charge in a society where labels often confine individuals. Those on the Autism Spectrum face unique challenges. Stereotypes and assumptions overshadow their abilities. However, Spectrum Designs in Pleasantville is on a mission to challenge these norms. Through empowerment and innovation, they are paving the way for inclusivity and acceptance, ensuring that being on the Autism Spectrum is not a limitation but a unique strength. Join me in celebrating their efforts to break free from societal boxes and embrace diversity. ://https://lnkd.in/dBBCUCET

Bridging the Gap in Autism Diagnosis: A Call for Early Action and Inclusive Support Today, on National Autism Awareness Day, let's acknowledge the critical need for earlier diagnosis and support for autistic children, particularly within the Black community. Studies show Black children receive diagnoses an average of 2 years later than white children. This delay can significantly impact their access to crucial therapies and interventions that can optimize their development and well-being. Several incredible organizations are dedicated to autism awareness, advocacy, and support. Let's connect with and amplify their voices: ✔️Autism Speaks: https://lnkd.in/ecc_z7yc (research, advocacy, resources) ✔️Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN): https://lnkd.in/eK_E_cr9 (advocacy by and for autistic people) ✔️The National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW): https://www.nabsw.org/ (supports Black families navigating autism diagnoses) Together, we can build a more inclusive world where all autistic children have the opportunity to thrive. Lessons in leadership from one of the best, right here. As well as lessons in courage, clarity, sincerity, and humor. Come for the “strategies that work” slide (and similar). Stay for the Thriller dance photo (and similar ☺️). #leadership
Gave my first talk on my autism journey yesterday at the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge that is run by Simon Baron-Cohen. They’ve asked me to be an ambassador for their nonprofit awareness arm, which I’m excited to do. Might have been nice to have some more talks on this first to hone my message but I jumped in and went straight to Broadway. Lots of shoutouts for many of you here (especially Emma Thorp and John Thorp and Patti, and Nick Robinson and the Leprechauns of St. Pats). And photos from local papers (Scott Sharpe). The camera unfortunately isn’t on until the Q and A but then you can see Simon and me talking. Also promo for Carl the Collector on PBS (Larry Irving). https://lnkd.in/ehaxKF56

Did you know that almost 40% of girls are neurodivergent? Neurodiversity is the idea that we all have different brain wiring. If you don’t have a diagnosable brain-based difference, such as autism for example, you are of the “neuromajority”, or are “neurotypical”. But if 2 out of 5 girls think and experience the world differently because their brains process information differently, then we should have a way to bring understanding and acceptance to the neuromajority. Good Friend, Inc. has an online platform, Good Friend Academy, that allows any child service provider anywhere to access developmentally-specific peer education films, discussion guides, and other supplemental materials. Through a generous grant from Women and Girls Fund of Waukesha County, we are able to provide our Good Friend Academy to to a select number of Waukesha County Girl Scout Troops! Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. 🌟If you're a Girl Scout Leader, watch for more information about bringing autism awareness, understanding and empathy to your troop! 🌟 #AutismAwareness #WaukeshaCounty #GirlScouts #Inclusion #Autism #Spectrum #GoodFriend #OnTheSpectrum #AutismInclusion #GoodFriendAcademy #MixedAbility #BetterLearning #AutismSpectrum #EarnAPatch
