If you had asked me 16 years ago what I thought I would be doing, career-wise, in 2024, I doubt that I would have said this. I started at Advantage Publications (Insights Inc.) as a Marketing Associate in 2008. I was less than 2 years out of college and this was my first "real job." I had no idea that financial wellness would become my calling -- I probably would have laughed at you, and maybe cried. I was 40k in credit card debt, accumulated for every wrong reason. I was convinced that I had already ruined my financial life. I had no idea financial trauma was a "thing," and financial therapy was in its infancy, thanks to trailblazers like Kristy Archuleta, Ph.D., LMFT, CFT-I(TM). I had no idea. Over 16 years, I have designed custom interactive slide calculators for: The Social Security Administration The FDIC The CFPB The US Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Reserves CalPERS VOYA I bought the company in 2019. I own the copyrights and registrations for the products I designed and those I have brought into the present. I have come to and through a place of reckoning for my past spending decisions, and talked about this piece of my story, and will talk more. I believe that financial wellness saves lives. I believe that my materials help people come to a place of empowerment, of "I can do this, I can take the first step." I believe that financial wellness will play a large role in addressing the suicide epidemic among our nations' Veterans, without whom our national security would not exist. I believe that the next generation will seek out financial security and financial wellness in ways we are only starting to imagine -- online and in-person. We went to a football game at 5pm yesterday. 5PM! When I was in uniform, I was usually putting out fires at 5pm. Fires tend to happen just as you're ready to go home. My nephew was playing and that kid is GOOD. Although it was frickin' freezing, the experience was far more meaningful than the cold. In the military I'd often get home at 7, 7:30? Sometimes later depending on the situation. I often walked out of the Pentagon just totally beat up. I know some of you know the feeling of walking out through security and just standing there, looking at the parking lot and sighing. Can I get a "like" if you know that feeling? When I left the military, I promised my wife I'd never do that again. I'd put time with my family first. And I have. I was offered a bunch of great high-level jobs. I was so thankful former colleagues and good friends thought so highly of me they wanted me to take those jobs, but they'd just be extensions of my former job. I'd pretty much just change my uniform to civilian attire. I respectfully declined. I moved out of the DC area and went to live a few hours away in a place where my neighbors are farmers and cows. Moo... I absolutely make less money with the little company I started and my salary from my radio show. But I live my life on my terms. I can say "no." Or "I'll get to it tomorrow because I'm going to an event with my wife." I could never have done that had I taken those high level jobs. We all have goals when we retire. Some people really love what they do. They want to get back to it as soon as they can. Some want to leave the military on a Friday, and start their new job on Monday. Others can't wait to start large businesses that'll grow to scale. While others want to get a part time job at Home Depot, and leave their job in the rear view mirror at the end of their shift. There's no wrong answer, only "your" answer. So do what you want, especially if you're lucky enough to get a military retirement pension. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY! And if that first job out of the military ain't doin' it for ya, resign and find another. Don't stay in a place you're miserable. Who's doing something that makes them happy? This is the #1 mistake of people who retire early. They retire early...on paper. On paper it looks great. Really great. And then you second guess going out to eat. Maybe you second guess taking a big trip. Here's the risk: You're 75 and you have $5M and think to yourself "Why didn't I spend more while I had my energy and health?" Don't retire early on paper because of a stressful job and then be frugal the rest of your life. Retire early with confidence knowing you're in a wonderful position for both your early retirement and the remainder of your retirement.
