I've been thinking about this. In life, we are shaped by our experiences. For me, one of the most powerful shaping events was earning my wings as a military pilot. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding things I have ever done. As a pilot, there was a lot of debate about whether the best pilots were born great or became great. One of my instructor pilots said this: "The very best pilots become the best because they have the most passion for flying, they work at it the hardest, and they fly the most." The parallel to becoming the best leader we can be is exactly the same. In one year's time, those of us who have the most passion for leading and work at it the hardest will be seen as the best leaders to work for. It’s not any more complicated than that. Debrief what the plan was, what went wrong, and what went right.   Both as a fighter pilot and Echelon Front leadership instructor, the Debrief is embedded in our culture to get better constantly.   At TOPGUN, our egos were fragile, so we called them ‘goods’ and ‘others.’ After a flight mission, we examined what we were supposed to do, what we did well, and what we will improve.   There’s no ill intent behind the Debrief.
