Most NGOs largely depend on donor funding to run their programs and operations. The willingness of such donors to commit their funds depends largely on the relationship built and the impact communication. Having a donor continuously commit in the long run depends on the level and quality of stewardship. ✓ In identifying your donors, go to those that believe in your mission. ✓ Cultivate the relationship by having constant contact, sharing your past impact and building warmer interactions. ✓ Soliciting for funds requires you to convince the donor that their contribution will result to such and such tangible impact. At that point, volunteers are a great resource to leverage on. ✓ Stewarding makes the donor feel appreciated and know how much their funding translated to the desired impact. Presenting the People Powered 2020-2023 Impact Report: Building Global Participatory Democracy! We turned three this year, and we’re releasing our first impact report to look back at our work so far! We’ve accomplished a lot: 🚀 We built global resources and programs to expand participatory democracy. Our resources have been used by over 9,000 people, and we’ve helped launch or improve 24 participatory programs. 🤝 We built a global community of practice. Our 130 members are the leading organizations and experts on participatory democracy, and we’ve directed over $4.2 million USD to members and their priorities. 🌎 We built an effective and democratic global organization. We’ve assembled a 15-person staff team based in eight countries and a democratic governance system that’s a global model. As a lifelong #learner, and admirer of their work, I was thrilled to be asked by ALNAP to contribute to their #WithLearningComesChange initiative, which kicked off so smartly with that "extra day" on 29th February this year to encourage people to set aside time to learn (a new habit hopefully). #Philanthropy has a unique role to play in enabling new and #innovative practices to take hold within the broader #aid #ecosystem. We can take bigger risks. With #risk comes a chance of failure, but also an #opportunity to #learn new and innovative ways of doing things. There are so many solutions out there and tried and tested and proven approaches that support efforts to #localizeaid and #decolonize aid - some examples I cite in my blog such as #sclr and #socialenterprise ideas such as the water enterprises being conceptualized and implemented by our partners Adeso or The Wayuu Taya Foundation, both organizations led by powerful women from global majority countries, combining enterprise with feminist programming principles. The main hurdle is in taking these rich learnings and examples of success and scaling them in order to see the #systemschange we all know is needed and required. That will require many of us (especially donors) giving up #power and making way for these new "learnings" to replace or complement and enhance the existing, more "traditional" methods we are all used to. An invitation I extend to all #humanitarian actors, but especially my peer #funders and #donors: "Can we #unlearn old habits that no longer serve us and/or #relearn together?" In the comments section below I'd love to hear what is the most surprising or easy or difficult thing you have had or are having to unlearn.
