What are the social determinants of well-being? For instance, they incorporate political, financial, and social elements. Social determinants of wellbeing are a broad scope of variables that exist in all parts of society. Notwithstanding, they are distinct from clinical consideration or an individual’s singular way of life decisions. A review referred to by the Public Institute of Medication found that clinical consideration itself just represented 10–20% of the supporters of individuals’ wellbeing results. Paradoxically, the numerous social determinants of wellbeing assume a much greater role in impacting an individual’s wellbeing, making up 80–90% of the contributing elements. This article investigates social determinants of wellbeing, including their structures and the jobs they play in forming medical care results.

I was delighted to see that this paper “Co-creating community wellbeing initiatives: what is the evidence and how do they work?” in the International Journal of Mental Health Systems emphasises community co-creation which is something that aligns perfectly with our person-centered living lab process at the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre.   Innovation should never be one-size-fits-all . By engaging directly with the community and stakeholders in our living labs, we tailor solutions that reflect the unique challenges and opportunities they face 🔍 . This isn't just about creating new products or services; it's about building solutions that resonate with people's lived experiences and drive real impact in their lives. Our Mental Wellbeing Living Lab is in early stages, but I am excited to see how this framework may fit in with our person centred work.   I am also eager to embed the learnings from the initial work of the community research network for mental wealth that I co-founded with Heidi Tweedie from the Moray Wellbeing Hub CIC. Leveraging our network’s collective insights and strength will enable us to understand how communities can collaborate to create, and develop mental wealth. Good paper here which pulls together a huge amount of evidence and reminds us of things that seem obvious, but often forgetten. 1. We've had policies and initiatives that encourage community consultation and coproduction to create social and health change since the 60s. It's not new, but we've not got all that much better at it across the board. 2. Shared purpose and committing to the long term with tangible action and change in the communities is key to more people wanting to work together. 3. consult widely and regularly, results come through relationships. 4. Make it easier for people to 'dial in and out' depending on their interests and commitment. 5. Continually learn and improve.

Do you think work is good for us?   Our Chief Medical Officer Michael Harrigan, Wellbeing Manager Maurice O'Connor and I recently had a discussion around this very topic. Since the pandemic, the focus seems to have been on the negative impacts of work, when research studies and experience actually show the significant benefits of good work (CIPD Good Work Index 2024 provides a useful “good work” definition).   🌟 Families without a working member often face low income and poverty, impacting children's health due to reduced parental income. Improving the health of the working-age population is vital for economic growth and social justice.   🧠 While discussions on mental health at work often emphasise negative effects, the potential benefits of good work deserve more attention. Different age groups, especially under-25s and over-55s, are likely to benefit mentally from work.   💼 Good work, especially with high-quality management and favourable conditions, enhances employee well-being compared to the negative mental health effects of unemployment. The big holiday has now come to an end and all New Zealanders are back to work that is natural and normal to find challenging return to work. Mental Health Foundation CE Shaun Robinson says that new year should be taken as an opportunity to work actively ensuring coming to work is an enjoyable and supportive experience for all. The Foundation has a free "Five Ways to Wellbeing" toolkit resource which helps make it easier for employees to return to work, and for employees to create better work environments. The five steps are: connect, give, take notice, be active and keep learning.  It is common to feel low getting back to work after holidays but it is uncommon if that continues.
