Our Forty Under 40 program honors young professionals in the Des Moines metro who dedicate themselves to their careers and communities. The honorees are selected each year by those who have received the honor in the past. Kim Butler Hegedus, a member of our 2001 Forty Under 40 class and our 2023 Forty Under 40 Alum of the Year, is one of our many alumni who help with judging. She says: "Over the years, this process has become increasingly competitive. ... When I am judging a nominee, I look for effort and quality of the submission. Did they take time to be thoughtful about their career success and how they are advancing themselves and their organization in a meaningful way? Career success is only one factor. How are they balancing professional achievement with community involvement? Did they take time to seek out individuals to give them a solid recommendation? These young professionals are our future leaders and critical to the health of our business community and vibrancy of our community." Here, Butler Hegedus spends time with her grandchildren, Jordyn (9) and Brady (5), at a Central College football game. Central is her alma mater, and her oldest son is on the coaching staff. Our clients are in great hands. This week, we gathered for three days in NYC with our Senior Associates at our annual International Academy 5 program. They learned about uncovering client needs, how to collaborate, and generate revenue. They were put in 5-person teams to prepare and present in a simulated client pitch to a panel of our partners (Fiona Henderson, Shauna Johnson Clark, Tim Kenny) playing the clients. This is not a new program for Norton Rose Fulbright. For 10 years, this is how we teach our lawyers to sell in a fiercely client focused manner. Our success can only follow the success of our clients (credit: Keith Hawk). Kudos to the future leaders of our firm for graduating from the program!

What an honor to be in the company of our amazing 2024-2025 Career Success Faculty Fellows representing all academic disciplines and The City University of New York campuses. Thanks to Senior Advisor for Transformation and Distinguished Professor Cathy N. Davidson, Chief Transformation Officer Rachel Stephenson, and University Associate Provost Lauren Andersen for their leadership on this program. Our Fellows have pioneered effective methods of helping students understand the relationship between classroom learning and careers that can be adapted to every field. The program has two major goals: (1) Embedding more career-relevant information into courses through five high-impact areas (syllabus and curriculum revision, student support, work-based learning, employer engagement, continuous improvement & utilization of data); and, (2) Identifying faculty leaders on their home campuses that can introduce their colleagues to similar enhancements in their courses. All this month, we are shining a spotlight on the incredible rising stars in financial services who are breaking barriers and making a difference in the industry, in honor of #BlackHistoryMonth. First up in this series: Taneka Lawrence, CFA, Head of National Accounts at Polen Capital, and member of our inaugural cohort of Executive IQ® by Money Management Institute. Our interview with Taneka below reveals her career journey, thoughts on the significance of this month, and invaluable advice for those just starting out in the industry: What are some of the experiences and opportunities that you can point to that supported your career growth? Going to Harvard Business School and completing the MMI Executive IQ program have been two of the best opportunities for supporting my career growth to date. I have developed skills and a network that has been valuable in helping me navigate transitions. The people and professors I have worked with in both programs give me confidence in my ability to lead others and position myself for stretch opportunities. What does Black History Month mean to you? During Black History month I am intentional about reminding myself and my children about the remarkable things that Black people have done in the country and around the world. I highlight for my boys some of the young people that have made a difference in their communities. I want to give them an appreciation for how beautiful and valuable they are to the world, even at a young age. The goal is to make them proud of who they are and confident in what they can become. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry? While graduate and continuing education programs have helped support my career growth most recently, I would not have known about this industry if I was not in programs like Management Leadership for Tomorrow and SEO (Sponsors for Educational Opportunity). My advice to young people starting out in the industry is to connect with these types of programs, find mentors and sponsors who can guide you in your organization, and never stop being curious.
