We invite our community of supporters, parents, and educators to join us for any of our three upcoming community engagement sessions regarding our recommended plans to use $94 million dollars of one-time funding from the historic Gary B. v. Snyder lawsuit. These sessions are an opportunity for you to understand how we plan to use this funding to better support our students, staff, and families and accelerate the literacy improvement the District has recently demonstrated. They’re also an opportunity to provide input into our plans before the School Board conducts their final review and approval. #TheFutureIsRising #WholeChildCommitment #OutstandingAchievement #Literacy #Education #Detroit #Michigan —- 📚Tuesday, April 30 | 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM Join us virtually: https://bit.ly/LitLawsuit1 📚Wednesday, May 1 | 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM Join us virtually: https://bit.ly/LitLawsuit2 📚Tuesday, May 7 | In-Person | EEVP at Finney 5020 Cadieux Rd, Detroit, MI 48224 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM Learn more on our website: detroitk12.org

📚 Did you catch our latest blog post, Unlocking Literacy by Lois Combs Weinberg? Lois reflects on the early days of her reading journey and the essential role literacy played in her family. She encountered challenges in the classroom that many Kentucky students are still facing years later. Advancing literacy in Kentucky is crucial for a brighter future for our students, and the Science of Reading is a valuable tool to make this vision a reality. This an interesting article about resegregation in schools, especially disparities in representation in gifted and AP programs over time. I’ve noticed a similar pattern in my area of families following the reallocation of resources to private and charter schools. My only critique of this article is of the sentiment that “their children had been given something they might not deserve.” when all children deserve a quality education. The answer isn’t to try to reallocate privileges but to expand them to encompass more children. https://lnkd.in/g-35vgnE

As you embark on the journey of petitioning to open or replicate a new charter school, one question should prevail: what drives the need for this school? It's all about the community. We recognize specific needs and aim to fill those gaps. Our mission is fueled by the desire to provide high-quality education where it's needed most. Diligently study nearby schools, their offerings and enrollment, ensuring that your school and program stand out. What sets your school apart from the rest? Specialized arts? A robust athletic program? Before you and your team embark on the journey of opening a new school, ask yourself and your team these questions. Know your goals and your mission- that's your compass! #charterschools #educationforall #missiondriven
