I presented a self-inspection demo a few months ago, after responding to an RFP from a large regional P&C carrier - think Top 25 in the US. 🌎 Like many P&C companies, they've posted growing underwriting losses for the past two years, and a combined ratio climbing over 119 in 2023. 💸🤯 They're obviously looking for solutions to slow and ultimately reverse the current underwriting performance trajectory. The demo went well, and I shared the positive performance of several of our existing carrier partners, who are leveraging self-inspection to help combat the growing risks of their aging property portfolios. 🏚 I finally heard back from them earlier this week. "We appreciate the demo and time spent with us. We've determined that other proposed solutions are a better fit for us at this time." Bummer. You can't win them all. 😅 But the next line really caught my attention. "We wanted you to know that we have interest in the use of drones to perform inspections." I nearly choked on my sip of morning cider. Drones are not the answer for personal lines underwriting. 🤦😑 Do they look cool? Absolutely! 😎 Valuable for claims and commercial lines? Yes! 💯 Sound innovative in a report to executive leadership? Certainly! ✅ Do they economically and sustainably address the major causes of carrier's underwriting woes in personal lines? Absolutely not. 😣 Huge kudos to this carrier for the courtesy email letting me know they were going a different direction. I can count on two fingers✌the number of times this has occurred. Typically you never hear anything and always wonder what happened. 😶 I sent a tactful response, grateful for the opportunity to participate in the RFP, and wishing them the best in their efforts. I truly hope I'm wrong, but I fear underwriting performance will continue to suffer without a major shift in their strategy.
