We're increasingly seeing calls from select committees for governments to get the public involved in decision making. This month – it’s the #NorthernIreland Affairs Committee (NIAC) urging ‘the Government to begin preparations for establishing a Northern Ireland #CitizensAssembly.’ The recommendation came as part of their report into the effectiveness of the institutions of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. Based on experience of running Northern Ireland’s first citizens’ assembly in 2018, our Head of Northern Ireland, Rebekah McCabe/ Ní Cába shared our support for 'structured civic engagement' that's been committed to and some initial thoughts on how those preparations need to be made to ensure the assembly does what it needs to. More here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eKTxJaJY Last month – it was the Justice Select Committee calling on Government to seriously engage the public on sentencing policy, suggesting the use of deliberative engagement. This came after Involve helped the committee to trial a public dialogue as part of their enquiry. MPs recommended that 'The MoJ should conduct regular, structured, deliberative engagement exercises with members of the public'. The report outlines that public discussion is trapped in a 'dysfunctional & reactive cycle'. Polling suggests that people want stronger sentences, but after deliberation the public put greater focus on the needs of the victim and wider society. Last week, we witnessed distressing scenes from far-right riots in Dublin. Sadly, not unexpected as independent organisations have long monitored and documented the rise of misinformation and far-right movements in Ireland. Our colleagues at Hope and Courage produced an analysis on how the disturbing events of November 24th unfolded. Both the analysis by Hope and Courage and the research from ISD highlight the urgency for systemic change. It’s essential to prioritise awareness and work together towards a more inclusive future.

  The 2023 Global Access to Justice Roundtable is around the corner! Taking place in Ljubljana, Slovenia from 6-8 December 2023 OECD Public Governance is proud to co-host this event with #Slovenia ‘s Ministry of Justice.   This Forum provides a unique platform bringing together over 100 participants from Governments and the Global Justice Community to explore and share experiences.
