Maths and science skills are crucial for Australia’s changing future, and it continues to be under-represented as a part of Australia’s economic and social wellbeing. As the world of work changes, we will need to change our skills to match. According to the Australian Government Department of Education, the gap between the knowledge generated in the education system and the skills demanded by employers and individuals is widening. One of the things I love about my job is working with philanthropists who donate to our university, making a life-long difference to our students and driving cutting-edge research. I believe that all universities can become great fundraising institutions: https://lnkd.in/g8aMun37 Over the last eight years, we have grown our philanthropic income 20-fold. This is what I've learnt on the way: 🦉 Be ambitious: the number one reason people don’t give is because they aren’t asked. 🦉 Create a fundraising university, not just a fundraising office: build a culture where academic colleagues play a lead role in securing philanthropic funds. 🦉 Invest for the long-term: the fruits are not always reaped immediately. 🦉 It’s a team effort: meetings, events, and campus visits take time and effort, which is only possible with an efficient, reliable and high-performing Development and Alumni Relations team. 🦉 Reinforce why universities matter: we need to do even more to show how we transform lives, drive the economy, enrich society, and make the world a better place for everyone. 🦉 Copy good practice but follow your own path: practices at other institutions can influence, but be distinctive. None of what we’ve achieved at The Manchester Metropolitan University would have been possible without the brilliant leadership of our Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Dominic Boyd, and his incredible team. This documentary, shared below, not only highlights the critical role of Islamic philanthropy in the evolution of knowledge-based societies but also underscores the urgent need for supporting higher education in Pakistan. As Dr. Oludamini Ogunnaike - Associate Professor African Religious Thought & Democracy at University of Virginia - eloquently puts it, “𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲. Despite being one of the most philanthropic nations globally, Pakistan allocates only a small fraction towards education, particularly higher education. With just 2% of our GDP spent on education - among the lowest in South Asia - our higher education enrollment rate stands at a mere 12%, the lowest in the region. This alarming statistic reflects a stark reality: a vast majority of our youth, especially those from local examination boards, are disenfranchised, unable to access quality higher education due to financial constraints. Habib University has been at the forefront of addressing this disparity by providing need-blind access to quality education, ensuring that the brightest minds have the opportunity to excel, irrespective of their financial background. Since its inception in 2014, the university has significantly contributed to creating a resilient nation by leveraging the power of community support. This year, I urge you to consider allocating a portion of your Zakat to Habib University. By doing so, you're not just impacting an individual's earning potential; you're investing in the future of Pakistan. Santiago Iniguez, Erik Schlie and the rest of IE leadership: you inaction speaks volumes! In the moment of truth on October 7th 2023, you failed to demonstrate leadership by not condemning the heinous terrorist attack. As individuals who profess to educate future leaders, this failure is particularly astonishing. Fortunately, not all students at the school lost their moral compass as you did. They reached out to check on my family and me because they understood the magnitude of the event, one that has affected every Israeli and, unfortunately, every Jew. Some did so discreetly, while others made public gestures, which you failed to do. Consequently, you issued a feeble and equivocal statement that led you straight into the quagmire of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Numerous other educational institutions have shown the right and sensible response when such a significant event occurs. You, however, remained silent, setting an example for your community, which includes a diverse Arab world. Your silence signals that it is acceptable to applaud Hamas and promote hatred, a message being embraced by some. I hope they remain a minority. Learn a lesson in leadership from NVIDIA's CEO (search the web for details). Perhaps, in the next humanitarian crisis, you will extend a simple gesture of checking on your alumni. In a heartening display of philanthropy, the Patrice Motsepe Foundation has stepped forward to donate R30 million to 26 university student representative councils (SRCs) in South Africa. This significant contribution is aimed at alleviating the financial strain on students by covering registration fees and historical debts. The announcement of this initiative was made by Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the co-founder and CEO of the foundation, during a dialogue meeting held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Dr. Moloi-Motsepe emphasized the importance of supporting students in their educational pursuits and addressing the challenges they face, particularly in the realm of financial accessibility.
