Our Forty Under 40 program honors young professionals in the Des Moines metro who dedicate themselves to their careers and communities. The honorees are selected each year by those who have received the honor in the past. Kim Butler Hegedus, a member of our 2001 Forty Under 40 class and our 2023 Forty Under 40 Alum of the Year, is one of our many alumni who help with judging. She says: "Over the years, this process has become increasingly competitive. ... When I am judging a nominee, I look for effort and quality of the submission. Did they take time to be thoughtful about their career success and how they are advancing themselves and their organization in a meaningful way? Career success is only one factor. How are they balancing professional achievement with community involvement? Did they take time to seek out individuals to give them a solid recommendation? These young professionals are our future leaders and critical to the health of our business community and vibrancy of our community." Here, Butler Hegedus spends time with her grandchildren, Jordyn (9) and Brady (5), at a Central College football game. Central is her alma mater, and her oldest son is on the coaching staff. Celebrating Black Belt Graduation: A Milestone in Education Today July 20, 2024, we proudly celebrate a remarkable achievement: #1MillionTeachers earned their black belts in 1st Dan, 2nd Dan, and 3rd Dan in the ancient commercial city of Kano. It was inspiring to see top anchor schools among the honorees and the addition of a College of Education to the esteemed list of black belters. The journey continues, and the flame of excellence in education burns brighter than ever. Our mission is to create lasting excellence in education, ensuring the spirit of 1 million teachers thrives in every classroom, school, and across Kano. "Show me your educational system, and I can tell you how your country is doing. Show me how you treat your teachers, and I can tell you the quality of your schools." We need a grassroots movement to empower teachers. No one else will solve this for us. The #1MT program is designed to be a toolbox for teachers. In a world where technology thrives, great teachers remain irreplaceable. This program is about empowerment: you have the toolbox—what will you do with it? Kano is not just a state but a beacon competing on a global scale. No one has ever become anything without a teacher. Teachers are like the US Marines known for their discipline and resilience. As educators, we must not see ourselves as transient workers but as dedicated professionals shaping the future. UNESCO predicts that by 2030, 50% of current teachers will exit the profession, and the world will need to recruit 40 million teachers, with 15 million from Africa. We must build our capacity and rise to the challenge. The time to act is now.
