Happy Birthday, Harry Potter! 🎂⚡️ As we celebrate the Boy Who Lived, I'm reminded of how its powerful themes of acceptance and advocacy that continue to resonate with my professional work. Many of J.K. Rowling's characters face unique challenges, yet find strength in their differences. Harry himself grows up with a lightning-shaped scar and the stigma of being "different." Yet, he learns to embrace his identity and finds a supportive community at Hogwarts. I especially love how individual strengths are celebrated like in Neville Longbottom's courage and growth and in Luna Lovegood's unwavering authenticity; each character contributes to their world in meaningful ways. Moreover, Harry Potter teaches us about the power of advocacy. Dumbledore’s Army stands as a testament to the impact of collective action and the importance of standing up for what’s right. As advocates, we too can form our own “DA” to promote equity, dismantle barriers, and create spaces where everyone can thrive. So, on Harry Potter’s birthday, let’s honor his legacy by continuing to champion inclusion and acceptance. ‘Shrew’ is such a thought provoking term and one that raises such deep reaction. Reese owns it and turns a word often used in insult into a strength. Women respect strongly spoken and informed females but this is not universal. In Boardrooms, EXCOMs and workplaces, what is seen as leadership strength in males, can be a distinct career disadvantage for women. Likability and acceptability still play into hiring, promotion and career longevity for women. Work on sponsorship, building inclusive cultures and gender balanced teams at all levels is essential to releasing the true potential of talented women and garnering diverse perspectives for great performance outcomes. Here’s to the shrew, may we proliferate and prosper!

Heading into MLK Day, and I'm thinking about dreams. 💭 I might not be working on the big civil rights issues that follow King’s legacy… in fact, some of my favorite days at work are ones with a whiteboarding session just talking through one person’s idea. I'm always jazzed to chart out the steps to turn visions into reality. It's about recognizing the incredible, identifying the right path, and figuring out actions that benefit everyone. It's about making those aspirations tangible. 🤜 🤛 Dr. King's work was not only about inspiring dreams but also about strategic planning and the power of small community actions. He was a masterful planner who understood that achieving significant change required meticulous organization and thoughtful strategies. So, I take great pride in sharing that a recent plan I collaborated on was adopted by Louisville Metro Government. The Clifton & Crescent Hill Area Plan outlines specific actions that can bring us closer to our collective dreams for our community. I encourage all to read through the plan. Shrew. If you look it up you will find multiple definitions. This word is considered an “old-fashioned” term referring to an “aggressive or ill tempered” woman, not man, but woman. I am in agreement with Reese here. I see it as a complement to be referred to as shrew or a shrew in todays world. Hear me out. It could imply that you're assertive, confident, and unafraid to speak your mind. In certain contexts, being described as a shrew might suggest that you're not easily swayed or intimidated, which can be admirable in certain situations. It could also imply that you're independent and not afraid to challenge societal norms or expectations. Overall, the term shrew back in it’s time period of origin, was a negative thing, an insult, but being called a shrew today might suggest strength and resilience. In which case, 🙋🏼♀️ I for one will own that title. How about you?
