For any applicants applying to DEI roles, especially just out of school, take care to ask: “What kind of ‘Experience managing Executive stakeholders’ are you prioritizing for this role? Tell me about a hypothetical, relevant scenario you are expecting me to manage.” “Has there been any sort of internal DEI surveys done by a third party for your company already? Would I have access to that data within my first month?” “What does success look like for this role in the first 3 months/6 months/ year?” “What kind of DEI or anti-racist or cultural sensitivity training has your organization undergone and what did the cadence look like? Was it mandatory? What was the participation rate?” The answers (or lack of) should give you transparency into what you are stepping into and help you gauge your capacity for it. Any other recommended questions for not yet seasoned DEI professionals?

Since I wrote about the last reorg level and promotions at BMW Group, there have been a few comments and questions via DM. Most of the time I am asked who is in which position now. The reactions range from shrugging shoulders via resignation to pure horror. Only one person said ironically: "they did everything right. And so did we, cuz we left." And then we have the few chosen ones. The so called „doers“. Not amused of my lines. Knowing they are part of the problem because they only care about performance and not about the company. The shortage of skilled workers is actually their egoism. Lack of innovation comes from focus on their own career. If their industry loses touch, it is because of their lack of imagination. But the real problem, the root cause, is the metrics. The companies would like to have the best of the best, an efficient team. However, the metric is incorrectly calibrated and only reflects elbow behavior, loudmouthes, cowards and social disorders. What is important is not recognised at all and so round after round there is just new [censored] floating on top and causing the “lake” to tip over. The Unexpected Dinner Lesson That Changed Everything! Henry Ford (Founder of Ford Motor Company) once took two candidates on dinner. Both were graduates from the same university, had the same GPA and were genius.. After dinner, they walked out of the restaurant. Ford:- (To one candidate) You're hired. Do you know how Henry Ford invented week-off's for us? If you don't, then read this interesting story 👇 Back in the 1900s, working in factories was tough. People had to work all week with little pay, and it wasn't good for anyone. But then Henry Ford, who owned a factory, noticed something important. He saw that when workers were happy and not too tired, they made better cars with greater efficiency. So, Henry Ford decided to increase their pay and decrease their shift times. This made them happier and more productive. But there was a problem. Even though they were making more money, they didn't have much time to enjoy it. They couldn't even find time to drive the cars they were making. So they demanded more time off but this would bankrupt Henry Ford because he was already paying them more. So, Ford came up with a brilliant idea. He gave his workers something called a weekend - two days off every week. But he also gave them a discount on buying cars made by his company. This is sheer marketing brilliance 🧠 . It was a win-win situation. This resulted in thousands of Ford cars being sold to their employees, and today Ford Motor Company makes around 250 million dollars by selling cars to its own workers. Found this inspiring?
