The systemic power that causes many to question where they belong and walk through finding the truth impacts First Nations, Métis and Inuit seeking their identity as they search through records. One part of this identity crisis is contributed by Indian Agents that came through (purposely through hunting season) using different terminology as they registered Métis... some used the term 'Half breed', others 'Bois-brûlés', 'Mixed blood', 'Half-caste', 'Creoles', 'Voyageurs', 'Coureurs de bois', (which means wood runners) 'Country born', 'Black scots', 'Breeds' and 'Metis Anglais' or in Inuit the Disc Number system, and Inuktized them as Canadian North found Inuit naming traditions confusing, forcing them to adopt Euro-Christian gender-specific names, and surnames.
The term metis (without an accent on the e and often a small “m”) means one who is of combined First Nation and European descent. This term comes from the French word, metisse, which means “mixed.” These individuals are not necessarily part of the Métis Nation.
It's a history of complexity that is constantly being unpacked.
Even though amendments in 1985 were made to entitlement of status that was no longer based on gender, and to restore the status of women who had lost it through marriage to non-Indian Status men, this is still something that has contributed to the loss of identity. It's more than just treaty rights. It's the destructive policies that created harm as people seek documentation to support their connections and unpack their lineage. Inuit and Métis do not have status, just like Non-Status Indians... aka Settlers. However, in separate judgments, the Supreme Court ruled that Métis and Inuit are the responsibility of the federal government (as opposed to provincial or territorial governments).
Working with historical records that document experiences of genocide, assimilation, and oppression, as well as the inherent anti-Indigenous bias and offensive language in these records, can create feelings of distress, grief, and pain for many. Reconciliation must begin with an understanding of shared truths regarding our colonial past and present as we work towards a better future.

We wrestle with the same questions and are on a journey to reclaim our identity, understanding that our current reality is also what it means to be a First Nations person in Canada.
