If you are waiting for a plateau in sales to start your marketing efforts, you are way too late. Yes, I understand, you run a small business. Sure, there are more urgent expenses. But you don’t need a million-dollar marketing campaign. What you need is to know your customers and your product. Your effort should be to enhance the product so you always delight the customer. The rest will follow. Ideally, you should hire a marketing agency from the outset. Or find a freelancer who knows their craft. So you don’t build inconsistent messages. Or even worse, start offering unsellable products. Marketers are not magicians, and not everything can be fixed. If this is the case, they may even suggest rebranding.

People keep outsourcing their marketing. (It's often a mistake) Maybe you aren’t a marketing expert. Maybe you're an established company. Do you still need to validate your strategy? “I want to outsource my marketing.” Oh boy. When I hear these words, I know the entrepreneur I’m speaking with is in for an uphill battle. You can outsource many things in your business, but marketing is not one of them. That’s like saying, “I want to outsource my breathing.” I mean, you *can* outsource your marketing. But it’s a terrible strategy. One that will likely drive your business into a hole. You can outsource marketing *activities*. You can hire an agency to create Facebook ads, do graphic design, and even write emails for you. But, riddle me this… - Who creates the marketing strategy the Facebook agency is following? - How is that agency employee supposed to know your prospect's everyday struggles, which takes market research? - Do they know your core values? Who the enemy is? What you’re fighting for? - Can they recognize when someone isn’t a good fit for your product? I could write 100 more. The point is that these decisions must be made internally, not externally. Even giant companies like Coca-Cola have an internal marketing department. Marketing is woven into the DNA of your business. You can’t remove marketing from the business without killing it. Outsource marketing activities. Never marketing.

Please STOP doing this in your marketing agency. Creating a toxic working environment. When trying to hire a marketing agency one of the important questions to ask is where they fit with your existing team.
