Special thanks to Mohammad Ahmad, Jehad, Jimmy, Scott and the entire leadership team from Atlantis for inviting me to their Grand Opening in Mahwah today. I'm always impressed how much a retailer can do with tight confines, like this 1,600-sq-ft store. The site, which Atlantis Management acquired from an area fuel wholesaler, accomplishes quite a bit: > Over-indexes smartly on energy drinks across its 13 cooler doors > Further elevates Atlantis' increasing investment in fresh grab-n-go food, b2c coffee, pizza, etc. > Focuses on the grab-n-go consumer with heavy emphasis on King size snacks, cartons of cigarettes (taking advantage of being relatively close to the tax-heavy NY border), high-margin general merchansise. I was particularly impressed with several features and strategies: - Rewards... Atlantis is pretty new on the rewards/loyalty, yet have roughly 20,000 members in about 8 months, with growth accelerating. - In-Store Promotions. The retailer is aggressive on promotions and every day low prices (edlp)... from the pics they use color codes to signal a promotion and a different color for edlp. let's see if you can figure which color is for which pricing feature [go to my facebook link below] - Design. pay attention to the signage's clean text and subway tile backsplash that gives this store a clean-yet-gritty urban touch, coupled with faux wood motifs on interior columns above the subway tile, yielding stronger earth tones. stronger earth tones. Only 18 yrs old, Atlantis started out on the fuel side, growing its network across the Northeast. Over the past roughly half-dozen years, it has made enormous strides on convenience retailing end as it parades toward 100 company-run locations (currently at 89 and should hit the century mark by next year). I think the crucial X factor here is what I would call “trophy asset” factor which somewhat over rides any traditional valuation. Dim sum, a cherished tradition in Chinese culture, has undergone significant changes in recent years. The introduction of QR code ordering and modern approaches has brought convenience but has also reduced the personal touch and human interaction. As digital transformation continues, a key challenge is to preserve the traditional behaviours and spirit that make dim sum special. Unfortunately, traditional dim sum establishments like Lin Heung Tea House (蓮香樓) and Sun Hing Restaurant (新興食家) are becoming increasingly rare to find. The origins of dim sum can be traced back to the tea houses that emerged along the Silk Road trade route, connecting China with Central Asia and Europe. These tea houses initially served as resting places for weary travellers. As the popularity of dim sum grew, these establishments began offering bite-sized snacks alongside tea, providing nourishment and aiding digestion. Nowadays, in Hong Kong and many other cities, dim sum restaurants have adapted to modern dining habits by serving throughout the day and into the evening. For example, Hakkasan in Las Vegas offers a unique experience by serving dim sum from morning, accompanied by tea, until past midnight, with cocktails. Despite these changes, the essence of yum cha remains the same - the enjoyment of delicious food in the company of loved ones. Looking ahead to the future, it remains uncertain what lies ahead for dim sum culture. Will it continue to adapt and innovate while staying true to its roots? Only time will tell. Paco Underhill describes a few techniques to ‘bend time’, and change the customers’ perceptions of a particular service encounter. The interesting thing is that the way you perceive time through your ‘internal clock’ may differ from real time. When people wait for a minute and a half, their sense of how much time has elapsed is fairly accurate. If waiting time is a bit longer than that, time distorts and they feel that the actual waiting time is much longer. Where restaurants get it wrong is at the end of the service. When the gesit asks for the bill. By the time this is requested the guest has decided to leave and waiting for the bill can trigger an unhappiness about the entire experience. In fact studies have proven that the moment of leaving in restaurants is 7 x more important than the moment of arrival.
