Making exceptional usage of the surface and tactical positioning of the longbowmen permitted the English to wallop the French army. Another more ancient armed dispute that was settled by the power of the long-range weapon was the famous Battle of Thermopylae. As a different entity amongst the infantry throughout the World War II, the sniper was able to develop his worth as a tactical possession and mental weapon. Rather of volume of fire and frustrating force, the sniper made use of stealth, high ground and surface, and exceptional objective to trigger fear and panic that is sufficient to stop a whole army or battalion on its tracks. The consistent, extremely computed objective is the trademark of a real sniper. This morning 79 years ago the Guards Armoured Division reached the American 82nd Airborne Division - as the observant reader will notice, less than two days after the ground and airborne phases of Market Garden started. But now, the attack stalled. For just like the British 1st Airborne, the Americans had failed to capture all the bridges on the first day of the assault. A terrible mistake as the utterly gutted but brilliantly led German II. SS-Panzerkorps had identified both the Rhine and the Waal bridges as the key targets that had to be secured as soon as possible - and did. Rather than finding the way open to Arnhem, the Guards Armoured and the 82nd would have to fight to get that vital bridge across the mighty Waal. It would see one of the finest feats of arms of the whole war when American paras of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment crossed the enormous river under fire in flimsy assault boats while the British Grenadier Guards stormed the bridge in the full knowledge that it could be blown up every second. A perfect example of brothers in arms fighting in unison. But this should not close our eyes to the fact that the Allies had gotten very lucky in Nijmegen. Not blowing that bridge in time was the worst mistake the Germans made during the battle and by all rights and logic, they should have succeeded in doing so. Just as we should not forget that this heroic attack would never have been needed if the 82nd had taken the Nijmegen bridge on the first day! It makes a lot of sense to consider Nijmegen the Schwerpunkt of the battle just as the Germans did. Here, the attack started to unravel as delay was heaped on delay. And here we see that in the historiography national sentiments come rearing up with a nasty hiss, when the blame is deftly shifted to British armour seemingly hesitating and unwilling to go. Unfair and incorrect, but now seared in the public mind. So let us remember the bravery of the combined allied forces and learn from their mistakes - including the less likeable attempts to pass the buck when things went wrong. Alliances are complex and imperfect, but it is so much better to be a part of it than to be on your own. Something worth to remember today.

It’s Friday …. Yay ! Thought we’d do something military today. No matter what anyone says we believe the A11 watch manufactured jointly in WW2 by Waltham, Elgin & Bulova was the first what has now become known as a Field Watch. However there were a number of iterations of the A11, so you will find A11s in the European Theatre with both the USAAF and a variation with the RAF, the model,shown here is rarer as it’s a FSSC-88-W-800 which denotes a US Navy pilots watch. As most of the war with Japan involved infantry and the US Navy and was fought in the Pacific over large stretches of water and small Islands so most US Navy pilots operated from Flat Top Aircraft Carriers or were based at Pearl Harbour. If only watches could talk this could tell a story we’re sure !
