Oh, how I'd love to say, "I'm back! And ready to dive in." But... Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. I'm drained. Sure, when you look at the photo below, you see a happy person. To be honest, in the past 6 months (or even more), I've felt like a juggler. The world is hurling one ball after another, I balance 2 or 3, and the rest fall to the floor. Even keeping up with simple tasks like posting on LinkedIn, or walking my dog feels too much. Sigh. So, how can I make myself feel better? I've decided to do the following 3 things. 1. Get some rest (and not feel guilty about it!) 2. Set limits and say "no" (and stop assuming I can do everything). 3. Prioritize. Prioritize. Prioritize. (Setting priorities as an ADHDer is tough!) Finally, I'm going to be kind to myself. If I haven't supported you on LinkedIn, replied to your DMs, or emails, I'm sorry. These things take time. Thank you for understanding. 🙏🏼 And, on a positive note, spending time with my passion helps me. And that's writing. 🥰 Hope you're okay. Celebration mode: On Looking for a way your children can play with more inclusive dolls? Well, the American Foundation for the Blind and Mattel, Inc. have worked together to do just that. They created a doll that wakes us up to disability inclusion and makes our children feel better about it too. (I'm jumping with joy!) Meet the first ever blind barbie. 🥳 She carries a white and red cane, sunglasses and her eye gaze faces slightly up and out. But that's not all. Her clothes are made of tactile fabric 😍 with a textured ruffled skirt and brightly colored hook fasteners for more accessibility. But, there we stood, me so excited my arms grew so independently alive that I almost smacked myself in the face with my elbows while my son and Tamas Méri chatted about cheeky foxes sleuthing in the early morning hours in the garden. I don't believe we meet people by accident. No. They're meant to cross our paths. And the heartwarming team at Access4you feels like a cozy family away from home. Warning.⚠️ This post contains sensitive content. Did you know disabled people were the first victims of the Holocaust? Yes. Disabled people were murdered in a number of Nazi programs targeting them. In fact, disabled people were described as: useless eaters empty human shells and a life unworthy of life. The Nazi regime chose these labels to paint an image of people incapable of doing anything. Of people needed to be kept in institutions. Of people unworthy to be part of society. Sigh... Yesterday I visited the symbol of terror and genocide. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland. And, I saw something that made me even more sad. Outside of block 11, (also called the Block of Death because hanging executions took place in the cellars and shooting executions in the yard) a wheelchair user waited below the entrance of stairs. I asked him why. He said, he's waiting because he can't get in. Because the building is inaccessible. Isn't it ironic? You see, the entrance to the museum (the new build) is for the most part accessible for wheelchair users and blind and low vision people. This means, the museum is aware of building environment accessibility. Well, what about the rest? And don't say "it's too challenging". I'm not buying. All it takes is a ramp. But I am curious. If we want to remain human shouldn't we remember the past? Shouldn't we learn and act on what we've learned? Shouldn't the entire museum be accessible to all disability groups? Ever heard of tactile maps? Here's a video bursting with gusto from Haben Girma. She explains what they are and how the work. And, Milo (gorgeous German Shepherd guide dog) gives his own presentation: how to guide a blind person across the street. Tactile maps should be the norm.
