Despite the APA opposing corporal punishment for nearly 50 years, it remains legal in 15 states, predominantly in the south. This practice not only has gender and race implications but also disproportionately affects children with disabilities. Key Concerns: - Gender & Race Disparities: Boys and black children are more likely to face physical punishment. - Impact on Disabled Children: Increased risks and vulnerability. - Generational Cycle: Those subjected to such punishments are likely to continue the cycle with their own children. - Long-term Consequences: Studies link corporal punishment to antisocial behaviors, health issues, depression, substance use, and increased suicide attempts in adulthood. - Conflicting Messages: The presence of another adult during punishment often confuses children, making them feel that the abuse is sanctioned. It's time to amplify the conversation around this issue, extending it to parental practices as well, and work towards breaking the cycle of physical punishment.

Fair Housing Friday: Anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act Since the passage of the FHA, multiple updates have been made. In 1974, the law was amended to prohibit discrimination based on Sex. In 1988, Disability and Familial Status were protected. When you think about the state of civil rights in your community, what protections do you see missing from the federal law?
