It’s not expat life; it’s you. Today marks two years since I arrived in Qatar. I find myself back at the same coffee shop where I spent my first day, but my perspective on expat life has shifted. Often, we point to typical expat experiences to give meaning to what we’re feeling. The overwhelm of the first week gives you stress. The quiet weekends at the beginning make you feel lonely. The cultural differences can fire up your annoyances. And while there is truth in them…it’s not just expat life. Last week, I heard someone say, “The first week abroad is always the hardest one.”. And I thought,The hardest one? I loved my first week! It’s a blank page with the promise of a whole new life you get to create. And while that person is probably thriving in year 2, I might find that the hardest part. One expat experience, the same emotions, but two completely different reactions. So the expat experience is a trigger we all share, but what it triggers depends on you. It’s always about what’s going on inside you. Nine years ago, I left America for love and embarked on an incredible journey.
