International Women's Day: Leading with Strength and Collaboration at UIBL In the wake of International Women's Day, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible team I have the privilege of leading at Universal Insurance Brokers Ltd. (UIBL). As the Executive Director of a primarily all-female company, my journey has been filled with invaluable lessons about leadership and the power of collaboration. Leading with Empathy and Empowerment: At UIBL, we believe in fostering an environment built on mutual respect, open communication, and understanding. This approach allows our talented women to thrive, bringing their unique perspectives and strengths to the table. I've learned that true leadership isn't about dictating, but about empowering and guiding a team towards shared goals. The Strength of Collaboration: One of the most powerful takeaways from my experience is the undeniable strength of collaboration. Our all-female team functions seamlessly, leveraging individual expertise to create comprehensive solutions for our clients. We celebrate each other's successes and support one another through challenges, fostering an unwavering sense of camaraderie. Lessons Learned and Looking Ahead: Leading UIBL has reinforced the importance of active listening, clear communication, and celebrating diversity. This report showcases the innovative initiatives and strategies that are driving significant progress in DE&I across the industry - and the 2024 data highlights the importance of employees working in an environment they would recommend to friends or colleagues from underrepresented groups. The Insurance Information Institute says that in 2023, women accounted for 59.4% of insurance workers, a higher rate than the 46.9% of women employed across the U.S. With 56.9% of women involved in underwriting and 54.9% working as insurance sales agents, women comprise more than half of the underwriters, sales agents and clerks. The number of women in the insurance industry increased by 14% over the last five years. Well I’ve somehow let almost a week pass since International Women’s Day without marking it. And while I would love to say something clever like this was intentional because IWD isn’t just about parity and celebration for one day of the year, but every day… the truth is I’ve just been thinking a lot about what it means for me. I was fortunate to be amongst a small group of allies invited to an IWD event hosted by Zahra Bahrololoumi CBE and Salesforce last Friday. The week leading up to it had me filled with: a sense of impostor syndrome around whether I was ally enough, fear of potentially being one of the only men in a room full of women, and really uncertain about whether I had anything to contribute. Zahra’s powerful opening had the men stand up, drawing explicit attention to our involvement and perhaps making open any discomfort, but more importantly, welcoming us and including us fully in the spirit of the day. And in that simple act of acknowledging a difference while creating space for engagement, my anxiousness dropped and I was able to participate deliberately, thoughtfully, and with far less uncertainty. Big lesson there. As the only child of a single mother who somehow balanced a career with the remarkable effort of raising me, I grew up hearing perhaps a bit more than most kids about the injustices and slights that a professional woman faces. And it’s left me as an adult with an abiding appreciation for all the extra work that women often must put in, and that we often do not see, just to be treated equitably. I hope it’s getting better. I’m certain that large scale commitment that organisations now make to D&I look nothing like they used to. I think we do that particularly well at Travelers for instance (https://lnkd.in/eZMYFgh7), and I’m privileged to work for some of the strongest executives I’ve ever met in Maria Olivo and Mojgan Lefebvre who sit at the top table of our global organisation. So a week on, the most impactful thing for me about IWD, is that I’m still thinking about it. I think it’s important that we all keep thinking about these themes, across all areas of diversity and inclusion. And I’m happy to be an ally, even if sometimes I’m not always certain how best to do that. #trvemployee

As I complete my second course on DEI; Diversity Equity and Inclusion strategies for business with the Judge Business school Cambridge university I want to thank Cambridge university for the most incredible journey. I want to share the first of many comments I received. " I am thrilled to see your dedication to enhancing DEI practices within the insurance industry. Your personal journey and commitment to disrupting traditional mindsets shine through your submission. Your use of personal experience as a case for diversity adds a powerful, relatable touch that many can learn from. It’s great to see how you leveraged your background to advocate for change and support others facing similar challenges. Your mission is not only necessary but inspirational. " So my message to the insurance world is I want to encourage you to engage in this journey, not because of external pressures to respond to stakeholders expectations but because it is important that our organisations represent the world at large. Inclusion for all is easy when approached with care , but has to be really embedded from within the organisation. DEI is confronting and for insurance professionals hard to deeply embed within the culture, but this work is vital. DEI is not as it may seem, and doesn't need to be as contentious as management has made it. What does Best practice look like to you ?
