Democracy matters in leadership because it ensures: Representation: It allows leaders to be chosen by the people, reflecting the will and diversity of the population. Accountability: Leaders are accountable to their constituents, fostering transparency and responsible decision-making. These where some of the reasons we hosted a Democracy Matters Community Conversation: We recently hosted an enriching community conversation, and it was truly heartwarming to see the turnout and engagement from our diverse local community. Facilitated and brilliantly summarized by top volunteer Charlotte Davey, here are the highlights from our October 2023 gathering: Our primary aim was to explore how we can make our voices heard and ensure our community's involvement in decision-making processes. We boiled it down to these three key questions: 1️⃣ How can we hold decision-makers accountable and make them listen to us? 2️⃣ How can we engage our entire community in shaping important decisions? 3️⃣ What types of events can bring us together to voice our opinions effectively? KEY FINDINGS: 1️⃣ Trust & Accountability: Our participants yearn for trust and accountability in decision-making processes. 2️⃣ Inclusion & Community Spirit: Inclusivity and fostering a strong sense of community are top priorities. 3️⃣ Valued Contributions: Everyone wants to feel their input is valuable and appreciated. HOW TO MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD: ✅ Close the Feedback Loop: Share outcomes clearly after consultations. ✅ Accountability Mechanisms: Hold decision-makers accountable for their actions. ✅ Transparent Decision Making: Explain how input will be used and decisions made. ✅ Representation: Ensure diverse community representation at events. Leaders of PFC members and initiative partners are invited to participate in facilitated dialogue sessions, as part of our initiative, 'Toward Collaboration and Growth: Productive Dialogue in a Polarized World': https://lnkd.in/gsrwQ4A3 Overall, the initiative is aimed at helping to increase collaboration and growth in the Canadian philanthropic community, in the context of our increasingly polarized world – including growing Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in Canada, and the conflict in Israel and Palestine. The goal is to generate ideas, practical solutions and useful resources to support our network in navigating difficult conversations and a way forward. The facilitated dialogue series’ core aim is to create an intentional and safer environment for leaders from PFC members and initiative partners to engage in meaningful discussions on the impact of polarization and discrimination, concerns about sector reactions and responses, aspirations for change, and the community’s collective role during this time. It will emphasize empowering voices, fostering learning and empathy, and promoting effective communication skills, especially during moments of disagreement, high tension, and polarization. Our hope is that reducing perceived risks associated with such discussions will encourage diverse perspectives and promote respectful and inclusive conversations. The facilitated dialogue series has been designed with a cohort experience in mind (executive leadership, board) of PFC members and initiative partners. A cohort will allow the group to build on discussions from each session and will promote trust-building between all participants. Along with the facilitated dialogues, the initiative’s 'Navigating the Legal Landscape' and 'Storytelling with Empathy' one-hour information sessions (scheduled for May 28 and June 5), will also help foster engagement. It is strongly recommended that the cohort also attend the two pre-dialogue online information sessions, as they will help set the stage for the dialogue series. These sessions are open to all staff and board from PFC members and initiative partners. According to a recent Forbes magazine article, there are three misconceptions that undermine Equity efforts in the workplace. They are: 1. DEI Initiatives Are Solely the Responsibility of HR or a DEI Officer 2. DEI Efforts Need To Be Time Bound 3. Public Acknowledgment Equals Effective Implementation These are dangerous misconceptions because the work of DEIB is not new. These theories and this work predates the murder of George Floyd by decades. We have to dismantle these misconceptions and replace them with operational facts and real life circumstances faced by organizations, their workforce, and the people they serve. DEIB can be positioned to shape a more positive environment for all when implemented ethically and strategically.
