The 7 principles of #UniversalDesign: 1) Equitable use: identical operation for everyone not just "separate but equal", and make the design appealing 2) Flexibility in use: empower choice in usage, improve accuracy of usage 3) Simple and intuitive use: consistency and simplicity including language skills and literacy, also effective prompting and feedback 4) Perceptible information: redundant info presentation and feedback, maximize "legibility", compatibility with reading methods 5) Tolerance for error: minimize hazards and errors, provide warnings and fail-safes 6) Low physical effort: minimize repetitive or sustained physical effort, and let people remain in a neutral body position 7) Size and space for approach and use: accommodate hand, grip, and easy line of sight for all people, including room for assistive devices and personal assistance These design principles guided the building of the Ed Roberts campus at UC Berkeley. Below is a great opportunity to earn up to 4.5 hours!   On Friday April 5, 2024, the IES and Parsons School of Design, in collaboration with Light Justice, will host Light + Justice Symposium: Interior Spaces, a symposium to explore how indoor lighting quality—especially in public facilities—is generally neglected for marginalized, under-resourced, and vulnerable occupants. This event builds on last year’s Light + Justice Symposium, which examined the intersection of outdoor lighting in the public realm with environmental justice and social equity.   Indoors, light justice means daylighting and electric lighting designed to provide a positive occupant experience. Light + Justice Symposium: Interior Spaces is an opportunity for lighting professionals to recognize inequities that can perpetuate inequitable indoor lighting for vulnerable occupants, including people of color, the aging, the impaired, and the incarcerated.   Panels including experts in lighting, design, and community engagement will discuss both the challenges and benefits of addressing these systemic inequities as an industry and offer case studies that engage these communities to provide equitable, quality lighting for neglected interior spaces and vulnerable occupants.   This hybrid event will be held live at The New School in New York, NY and online for a virtual audience. His mantra? "There is no playbook. Yes, there are best practices, lessons learned, and theories tested. But past precedent will only get you so far...If there is no playbook, then we write the rules; we author the future."
