Wow, time flies! Can you believe we are already coming to the end of March 2024 ? It is feels like just yesterday I made my New Year's resolution to continue my mission to contribute to a greener, more efficient world through my work in electrical engineering. Ever since I was young, I have had a passion for electricity. Growing up in a village where power was limited to certain hours of the day, I was always fascinated by the way electricity could light up our lives. I can still vividly remember the private energy producer using diesel generators to provide electricity supply to all the villages at 110V AC. Despite the challenges, I never let go of my love for working with circuits and power. I even used to build my own small circuits to power up light bulbs, though I did have a few close calls with electrocution along the way. Now, after more than 30 years of working as an electrical engineer in the industrials, I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to contribute to a more sustainable world. It hasn't always been easy, and I definitely didn't know much of power system when I first started out. But I have learned from others, pushed myself to reach greater heights, and never gave up on my mission. As I reflect on my journey, I want to encourage you to think about your own mission in life. What drives you? What impact do you want to make on your community and the world around you? Whether you are passionate about green energy, technology, or any other field, remember that you have the power to shape the future and create positive change. Press on, keep pushing ourselves to reach new heights, and to make a difference in the world. Today, i started a new position at Schneider Electric. More on that later, first a little history. Since graduating from college with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, I have worked in the field of industrial controls. My first job focused on motion control, where I was able to explore many aspects of engineering, from verification and validation testing, hardware design, real-time firmware development, software design, system design, research, and management. In 1987, I moved to Square D Company (later purchased by Schneider Electric) and focused on designing, developing, and testing Programmable Logic Controllers, I/O systems, industrial networks, and working in standards organizations. For the past 17 years, I have focused on product and system architecture. What always excited me about working in the field of industrial control was that the product we designed made thing happen. I watch logs being converted to lumber, paper turned into corrugated cardboard, sheets of steel pressed into automobile fenders and hoods, raw sewage processed into drinkable water, raw materials converted to beer, and much more. During my tenure at Schneider Electric, I gradually lost my eyesight between 1999 and 2012. Thanks to the support of my friends and colleagues, I was able to continue my engineering career. However, no longer being able to see the products I worked on slicing cheese, filling instant breakfast containers, making candy bars, reduced my passion for this field of work. In 2015, there was a home automation product that I wanted to buy, but it was completely inaccessible. This single event fueled a new passion; accessibility. Since then, I have been advocating for accessibility at every opportunity. But enough history. At Schneider Electric, we have a strong ambition to positively impact the society, our customers, and business partners. We have designed and agreed on bold goals to drive disability inclusion and accessibility. We want to become a role model for Inclusion and Care by design, and we want to pave the way and be copied for our great practices. We strongly believe that accessibility is an innovation and business driver where we accelerate our contributions to a sustainable and inclusive world. Schneider Electric has made internal and external commitments and signed agreements stating that we will contribute to a more disability inclusive world and accelerate the pace. To help support this ambition, I will take on a new role, Senior Principal Digital Accessibility Program Manager, In my new role, I will be responsible for building and executing the strategy for digital accessibility within the Energy Management and Industrial Automation business units, as well as Schneider Digital. This mission led me to establish Volta Energy, a company dedicated to pioneering cutting-edge solutions for the energy challenges of the 21st century. This groundbreaking technology leverages artificial intelligence and real-time data analytics to optimize energy consumption, reduce waste, and enhance overall system performance. It's already proven to be a game-changer for numerous industries, helping them achieve significant cost savings and environmental benefits. But our journey is far from over. Today we will talk about General Electric, whose stock has been one of the growth leaders over the past 3 months. During this period, General Electric stock has risen by +49.2%. At the same time, the industrial sector, to which the company belongs, grew by +10.1%, and the S&P 500 index by +7.2%. As you can see, General Electric shares show better returns than the sector average. General Electric is a global leader in the development and production of aircraft engines. The company services about 70k engines for private and government customers in 160 countries, such as Airbus and Boeing. The company has 59 plants in the US and 102 in other countries. The company operates in the industrial conglomerates industry. It was founded in 1892. In 1896, it was listed on the NYSE, and in 1957 it was included in the S&P 500 index. For the past 6 years, the company has been led by Lawrence Culp and a team of experienced managers. The main competitors of General Electric are Honeywell International, TransDigm Group and Roper Technologies. As we can see from the table above, it is ahead of its competitors in terms of capitalization, as the company has a number of competitive advantages. General Electric's strengths are based on its market positioning. About 50% of all Boeing 777 aircraft engines are manufactured and serviced by the company. The company also supplies engines to Boeing's competitor Airbus, namely for the new A320neo model and other aircraft. One of the most promising segments is defense contracts, which has grown by +14.6% over the past 5 years. And in October 2023, the first 2 T901 engines for a new generation fighter prototype were accepted by the US Department of Defense. General Electric published its latest report on January 23. 74% of the revenue structure is made up of manufacturing costs and 26% of gross revenue.
