Last week, Addleshaw Goddard and Headway Capital Partners hosted our very first Independent Sponsors Forum, aimed at private equity sponsors pursuing a deal-by-deal approach.   We welcomed nearly 120 sponsors, investors and others in the ISP community to our London office for an afternoon of insightful panel discussions and presentations covering a range of topics including the market opportunity, challenges of capital raising, legal and commercial terms and practicalities of getting deals done. Not to mention, plenty of networking over drinks and nibbles!   Over the past few years, we've certainly got the impression that this operating model is gaining momentum and the recent Financial Times article supported this. Update your CV and get LinkedIn tailored to the Board market. 3. Get general Board and governance experience at clubs, schools, committees and not for profits. 4. 📋 End of term school report Yesterday we went through the first five months of the year to assess what has gone well, and what we need to get back on track. What went well: 🚌 Got some great people on the bus. ❤️ Have supported 678 children & young people already (goal is 700 for the year). 🌍 Made significant improvement in understanding our impact. 📈 Quantified the future need. 👔 Launched a new business heroes club (from £250 a month, message me for details 😉) ✅ Under expenses budget for first five months. What didn’t: ❌ Didn’t hit our income goals - fundraising is tough 🙌 Behind on our internal OKR to improve team member recognition and understanding of what success looks like. So we spent much of today debating what we need to alter to balance the books and improve team recognition. Always difficult to spend time on the challenging stuff but important nonetheless. I appreciate the team’s help and input, and now looking forward to turning those negatives into positives.

Not #multifamily or #housing related as per my typical posts but #philanthropy and wise, meaningful charitable giving is one of my most important life goals. An interesting read.

We provided local leaders with a set of tools to address the staffing crisis in city government and saw several of our recommendations adopted. We mobilized quickly after toxic wildfire smoke engulfed New York to share best practices from around the world to improve air quality and protect New Yorkers. We’ve submitted testimony at the city, state and federal levels on housing, mental health, resiliency infrastructure and more. We’ve published a weekly newsletter that highlights key policy stories from our city and elevates creative policy initiatives and opinions from around the globe. We are just getting started at 5BORO. And with your help, we know we can have even more of a positive impact on our city. Results matter... Celebrating with clients in Michigan this week as they post 58% growth in their 2023 fundraising! 58%!!!!! Results matter--but how we get them also matters. Here is what they did: 1. When we posed deep questions--they searched deep to answer. 2. When confronted with data--they accepted realities. 3. When we advised a restructure--they went and got AMAZING talent. 4. When we said its not just about the bottom line--its about donor engagement and retention--they went full bore. 5. When we said you have to start early to get results--they started right away. At the end of the day THEY got these results--it is their win! Consultants are great (at least I think so!), but they cant get your results--they just help you create the conditions to grow--you have to do the hard work. Embrace Big Tasks: How We Sparked a Downtown Transformation 🌟 Don't Shy Away from the Extraordinary 🌟 A decade ago, Roger and I moved to Paulding, Ohio. When I started at the Chamber, my first task was to raise the money and get the square decorated. What commenced as a modest initiative to illuminate our courthouse square grew into a spectacular downtown celebration—a journey that exemplifies the power of embarking on seemingly impossible tasks. We started with a simple vision: to light up the town. With humble beginnings—just a few lights on poles—we laid the foundation for something remarkable. Persistence was key; in three years, our efforts bloomed into a Christmas spectacle featuring a towering tree, a dazzling parade, and a welcoming Santa house. This change didn't solely rely on our endeavors; it was fueled by unwavering support from our  local community, both in time and resources. From support from businesses to 4H kids hanging lights, the whole village turned up to make it happen. What's truly heartening is witnessing the ongoing growth of this event. The Village of Paulding now sparkles with life each holiday season. The ongoing enhancements and additions since my involvement speak volumes about the essence of such initiatives—growth, evolution, and continuous improvement. Here are some pointers from my experience: 🌟 Start Small, Think Big: Begin with manageable, achievable goals that lay the groundwork for something larger. 🌟 Build a Dream Team: Rally like-minded individuals who share your passion and watch your initial vision expand far beyond your imagination. 🌟 Celebrate Growth: Even after you move on, revel in the progress of your initiatives. Embrace change and evolution as signs of success. So, my advice to you? Don't fear initiating what might seem insurmountable. Take that first step—be it a small stride or a giant leap. Embrace the challenge, gather your tribe, and revel in the transformation you can bring about. Remember, the most incredible journeys often begin with a single spark of inspiration. Wow. What a week. ☔ On Wednesday of this week we delivered Rainmakers 2024 our biggest conference since I joined TheBusinessDesk.com, possibly ever. 👨🎓 As I said in my introduction at the event, one of my previous jobs was making sure the university sector was sat at the right tables as the Northern Powerhouse built momentum. I’d host ministerial visits, I launched a think tank, and made sure the right people took part in conversations on skills and research between the Mayor’s office and the business community. But I always felt that there was a voice missing in these conversations. Where was the burgeoning community of investment businesses, world class advisers and suppliers to a sector that gives the North a real edge? 💰 So when Garry Wilson of Endless LLP, a home grown investment business, took over as chair of the British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA), we saw an opportunity to propel the achievements of this community and the businesses that Endless, and Palatine, NorthEdge and TDC, have backed. Our event saw honesty, vulnerability, generosity and ambition in equal measure. Not just to make businesses better, but drive positive societal outcomes. 🤝 After a successful first conference we want this to be the start of a deeper partnership between TheBusinessDesk.com and the corporate finance community. For too long this economic success story of the last 20 years has been excluded from the conversation around economic strategy. Private capital and professional expertise can really help shape the future economy of the North. Let’s put that right. 🎒 Elsewhere, the world carried on. We saw Endless LLP sell Hyde-based Findel Education for a tidy sum, delivering a healthy four times return, a business who's progress was stymied by a Competition and Markets Authority probe not too long ago. ⛑ We were also chasing all week for the inside line on the ‘pre-pack’ rescue of troubled engineering group The Pexion Group by Interpath Advisory and are curious about the intentions of Baaj Capital. 🍞 Top of the pops though this week was an absolutely humdinger of a story that Neil Hodgson landed about the aftermath of a Liverpool-based bread business Coulton's which was hit by the sudden death of its owner. ❓ Next week on TheBusinessDesk.com’s Rainmakers platform we’ll be looking closely at the decision by the British Business Bank to award the contract to deliver the equity portion of the Northern Powerhouse investment fund to Praetura Ventures ahead of the incumbent, Maven Capital Partners.
