As you progress in a career, responsibilities should fall into a range rather than a singular framework. One of the positive side effects from the past few years, amid a new way of work, is that many of us were forced to rethink how we spend our working hours - and what work itself looks like or should be. A key benefit of a hybrid model is that you can design alternating days in different places to call upon distinct aspects of your interests, your pursuits, and your ambition. Here's a look at how my Thursday and Friday shaped up last week:
THURSDAY
I attended a breakfast hosted by a law firm in East Midtown. It was targeted for B2Bs, however I knew I'd find some good conversations there regardless. Whether for their consumer portfolio companies or within their professional networks, some people had ideas for who I should speak to, via their suggestions. It's good at times to be the only one of your kind in the room. Then, I headed downtown ahead for a lunch to welcome a new team member.
I remained at the office for only a bit before going to the final portion of a conference about data. They hosted some sessions about how to apply data to marketing. I stuck around to meet a few folks. Finally, I walked nearby to a happy hour that brought together fintech founders. Four in-person events outside the office on a day in the City is my limit.
FRIDAY
I prefer to schedule introduction calls for Fridays when working from home. Coming off long days in Manhattan, I look to ease into the weekend. My first call got cancelled. Then I spoke to a founder who organizes offsites for remote-first companies. He had hosted a NY Tech Week event I didn't make it to, and I received an email in the days that followed asking if I wished to meet virtually instead. I took him up on it. We spoke casually for 30 minutes about what makes a good event going forward. We disagreed respectfully about some of it, based on what we'd seen and heard, which bodes well for us to grab coffee this season.
My next call was with a junior PR person hoping to transition from agencies to in-house. I offered some insight about the difference between those two entities, especially in a tough market. After the call, I sent half a dozen opportunities to look into. Then, I had another call with someone whom I'd missed during NY Tech Week. She described the service they provide to business veterans. I countered with what I needed adjacent to it. She's going to bring another team member into the conversation to find out if they can help. Just after, I spoke to someone by phone about the ongoing war overseas.
I closed my day with a call with a colleague who will be leaving our company. I gave some advice about how to approach startups. I ushered along 10 job listings I'd seen that she'd match for. I spotted another one this weekend - and sent that, too.
I'll begin my Monday in the City at coffee with a visitor, someone who's building DTC businesses to be better this decade. I look forward.

1moEnjoy Shoreditch, Dmytro! It’s great vibe there ie. relaxed people, good food, craft coffee and beer. I used to be there often pre-COVID, attending board meetings of an early stage company I supported those days
