AFTER THE RAINING TUESDAY Nikki Haley's public statements and policies have consistently raised concerns within the LGBTQ+ community, particularly among transgender individuals. She has been criticized for misgendering transgender people during her campaign and making unfounded claims that teenage girls are contemplating suicide because of transgender-inclusive locker rooms. Given this backdrop, the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender individuals, are facing increasingly difficult times. Actions and rhetoric like Haley's and Republicans vision underscore the vital need for advocacy and support from organizations and allies. Despite limited assistance from Democratic groups, the resilience and solidarity within the LGBTQ+ and transgender communities remain crucial. Now, more than ever, it's essential to mobilize, advocate for equitable policies, and support the most vulnerable among us. Organizations like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and GLAAD play pivotal roles in this effort, providing resources, education, and advocacy to combat discrimination and promote inclusivity. As the political landscape evolves, the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender individuals in the USA and Puerto Rico, must prepare for challenges ahead. This calls for a united front to protect rights, promote understanding, and ensure that every individual can live authentically and safely, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. For more than a decade, The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation has monitored the security situation for women human rights defenders globally. Аccording to their latest survey, 1 in 4 feminist activists has received death threats due to their work. Comparing to the results of previous studies, the survey has noted that matters are deteriorating for women’s rights activists and democracy in general, as they face challenges such as pushback, resistance, and a shrinking civic space. On top of that, feminist activists are often attacked for their sole existence and identity. In many patriarchal contexts, simply speaking up as a woman is enough to become a target of hatred. Anti-gender movements, traditional and religious actors, and far-right groups also play a significant role in instigating this wave of harassment. In popular discussions about the contemporary crisis of #masculinity, the focus is often on reactionary narratives like 'men feeling left behind' or the online #manosphere. However, there is still limited awareness outside academic and political circles about proactive, global anti-gender coalitions driven by both ideological and political motives, which aim to reshape the global political landscape. As part of a contribution to MediaCat Magazine's theme on politics, media, and elections 2024, I share a few insights from ongoing multi-sited/modal ethnographic research on global anti-gender movements, the proactive politicisation of #gender, and their #disinformation strategies. Interestingly, in the media landscape, these loose networks often manifest through 'public intellectuals' and online personas who manipulate public opinion. The figures you may encounter, often advocating for a more 'moderate stance,' can be as diverse as an author of popular 'airport books' on mental well-being who occasionally tweets about the importance of marriage and traditional family values, or a young politician advocating for green policies within the EU while simultaneously secretly lobbying for abortion restrictions. This type of disinformation is particularly challenging to discern in everyday media consumption. However, far from being isolated cases, they are part of larger, loose networks that strategically contribute to the polarisation of public debates over whether women's and LGBTQI+ rights have 'gone too far'.

This weekend, my wife Rosa Peralta and I celebrated both the beginning of pride month and Mexico’s historic election to vote in its first woman president. Frankly, we really needed this moment of celebration, because it’s a time when there is so much at stake for democracy—here and everywhere in the world. 2024 will be a powerful year with more countries holding national elections than ever before. (78 countries, impacting billions of people) In the US—officially designated a backsliding democracy even before the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision—conservatives have been working against LGBTQIA and women’s rights by funneling more than $1 billion overseas to anti-gender groups, according to tracking from the Global Philanthropy Project, Inc. And journalists quickly made the correlation between regression on bodily autonomy and degraded democracies. LGBTQIA rights have always been the canary in the coal mine of democratic backsliding, as Outright International has confirmed again and again. Authoritarian leaders target LGBTQIA people precisely because their rights are seen as less protected than others, so their homophobic and transphobic attacks will not incur the same costs. If you haven’t been investing in these intersectional issues because you feel hopeless and can’t bear to look at the news, you can always start today. To ensure a just, multiracial, pluralist democracy, we must invest in it. We must invest in building political power in the places where LGBTQIA+ rights and gender and racial justice are under greatest attack. We must provide long-term, flexible, unrestricted funding for organizations focused on developing power among women of color and LGBTQIA+ communities and driving movements for change. As Pamela Shifman said in her article in Ms. Magazine this week, “the struggle for democracy and for gender, racial, and economic justice is one fight. It’s our fight. Authoritarians are counting on us to miss the connection. Because once more of us do, we will become unstoppable.”

In state capitols nationwide, a barrage of proposals to limit the rights of transgender people are advancing in conservative legislatures even after those kinds of measures fell flat with voters last fall. Just three weeks into the new year, there are at least 300 viable anti-LGBTQ bills being considered by state lawmakers, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, including those that were held over from last year but can still be acted on. “Last year was by far the worst year on record that we’ve seen” for anti-LGBTQ legislation, said Rose Saxe, the deputy project director at the ACLU’s LGBT & HIV Project, noting that 500 measures were introduced across the country last year, and more than 80 became law. “This year is not feeling better. Things are already feeling aggressive in the speed in which legislatures are taking up these issues.” The influx of anti-trans bills, in particular, is jarring, given that Republicans who campaigned on restricting trans rights—such as Kentucky gubernatorial candidate Daniel Cameron and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin who sought Republican majorities in the state legislature—were unsuccessful in last November’s elections. “What you’re seeing play out,” said Brandon Wolf, a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, “is a tug-of-war between the will of the American people and this faction of right-wing extremists who are desperate to use government as a weapon to control the rest of society.” Wolf said proponents of the anti-LGBTQ legislation often describe their interests as protecting children, but now their proposals go far beyond that. A few years ago, lawmakers in Florida wanted to bar transgender girls from youth sports, but that has led to bills pulling books about families with two moms from the shelves of school libraries.

We used our documentary film Equal Means Equal(2016) to educate, organize, and mobilize women in the 15 unratified states to take up the fight for the ERA again; and we are proud to say we successfully ratified the last three states: Nevada (2017), Illinois (2018) and Virginia (2020). Although the thirty-eight states needed have ratified the ERA, it still has not been published, adopted, or enforced. Informing the public of this legal injustice and fixing it is critical to ending the discrimination and rollbacks of our rights, presently increasing every day. The ERA is a game-changer for American women, girls and LGBTQ people. In fact, it makes any discrimination based on sex or gender illegal. This includes discrimination in pay, gender-based violence, pregnancy discrimination, reproductive rights & bodily autonomy, LGBTQ rights and so much more. 96% of Americans believe that men and women are equal but over 85% believe this equality is already explicit in our Constitution. It is not.
