As we commemorate World Health Day this Sunday, under the theme, "My Health, My Right", it allows us to reflect on how the ethos of ESG principles are reshaping the healthcare landscape. From public hospitals to private healthcare institutions, the practice of ESG has moved beyond business strategy to a commitment to ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all. From the public healthcare providers like NHS UK and the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care to private healthcare cases such as KPJ Healthcare Bhd in Malaysia and Apollo Hospitals in India, the alignment of ESG principles in both sectors symbolises a significant shift in healthcare. It reflects a changing perspective where healthcare services are considered a fundamental right rather than a privilege. Today, I attended a dynamic workshop in Sydney focused on how health technology assessment (HTA) should account for climate change. The discussions were lively, informative, and, most importantly, crucial for our future. Thanks for the invitation to be part of the conversation Humanise Health. Rising temperatures, increased pollution, and extreme weather events lead to a spike in respiratory issues, heart problems, mental health crises, and infectious diseases. These aren't distant threats; they're happening now. It was great to hear Assistant Health Minister Ged Kearney talk about how important it is to proactively address the impact of climate change on health. HTA, for the uninitiated, is where health experts look at new tools and treatments, like medicines, machines, or tests, to see if they work well, are safe to use, and are a good value for the money. Like climate change, its technical, complex and essential to understand. Our approach to HTA must evolve. Sustainability, meeting today's needs without sacrificing tomorrow's, is key. By evaluating the environmental impact of health technologies, alongside their clinical and economic benefits, we can foster a healthcare system that's vital, robust and green. Empowering people to have a say is essential. Australians want to understand these complex subjects so they can participate actively in decisions that affect their health and the environment. True empowerment means knowing the jargon and feeling safe and confident to sit at the important tables. It's not only the big decisions where you can make a climate impact. Every decision counts. Did you know that there are some asthma inhalers that use your breath to work, while others use a special gas to spray the medicine into your lungs? Dry powder inhalers are a more sustainable choice. Some folks will need the gas-powered inhalers but not everyone. I certainly don't know the climate impact of many of the health choices that I make. And I would like to be able to factor this into many of my choices. Today’s workshop wasn't just informative; it was a call to action. By enhancing HTA processes to include sustainability, we can address the long-term effects of climate change on health. Let's educate, engage, and empower our communities. Together, we can ensure a healthier future for all Australians. 🌐 Strengthening Global Health Through Local Manufacturing: A Milestone IFC & WHO Partnership 🌐 We know that we need actionable steps that public and private stakeholders can take to build resilient health systems in developing countries. But what are these? That’s what we address in the Chairs’ Summary from our latest collaborative effort with the World Health Organization (WHO) during The World Bank Group’s Spring Meetings 2024. In a series of co-hosted roundtables over the past 9 months, we identified a number of strategies to enhance local manufacturing capacities, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and mobilize necessary investments. The goal is to ensure that health systems are equipped to handle current needs, and also prepared for future challenges. The collaboration between IFC and WHO is pivotal. By combining our strengths, we are better positioned to implement sustainable health solutions that can withstand the tests of crises and pandemics. Pandemics, conflicts, and environmental crises exacerbate this strain, demanding both more funding and innovative resource mobilization. A 2023 OECD report highlights a $4.3 trillion financial gap for achieving SDG 3, notably with reduced contributions from developed nations post-pandemic. This emphasizes the need for innovative financing solutions. The "Utilizing Innovative Financing to Strengthen Resilient Health Systems" session will shed light on innovative health financing tools, evaluating their sustainability, and measuring their impact on social outcomes. Some of the topics that the panel aims to cover are: Criteria for selecting innovative financing tools. Assessing their sustainability. Measuring impact on social outcomes.
