DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations’ Post

A huge congratulations to ARCHES, the first US clean hydrogen hub to be awarded under the Department of Energy’s regional clean hydrogen program. The cooperative agreement between the DoE and ARCHES enables up to $1.2 billion in federal funding over the span of the program to help build clean hydrogen infrastructure in California. It is one of seven hubs selected across the US by the DoE to build the nation’s clean hydrogen production, distribution, and end-use. The overall program enables up to $7 billion of federal funding and will position the US to become a world leader in the production of clean hydrogen, which is critical for many hard-to-decarbonize sectors.

⚡️⏩ I’m really looking forward to represent Baker Hughes on the TxH2 Council and work with the Railroad Commission of Texas and other members to advise on the expansion of hydrogen production, pipeline transport and storage in Texas. Award Wednesday Announcement! This week, OCED awarded 2 projects to begin Phase 1 planning and development activities: ▪     Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program: OCED awarded the Appalachian Hydrogen Hub—also known as the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2), led by Battelle—with $30 million in Phase 1 funding out of the total project federal cost share of up to $925 million. The Appalachian Hydrogen Hub aims to help the nation lead in the advancement of the clean hydrogen economy while reducing emissions and pollution that has long affected air quality in Appalachian communities. ▪     Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Demonstrations Program: OCED awarded the Front-of-the-meter Utilization of Zinc Bromide Energy Storage (FUZES) project—led by NextEra Energy Resources Development, LLC.—with nearly $400,000 in Phase 1 funding out of the total project federal cost share of up to $49.1 million. NextEra plans to develop, build, and operate zinc-bromide battery energy storage systems at project sites in Morrow County, OR; Manitowoc County, WI; and LaMoure County, ND. 🌍✨ This #NetZeroWeek we’re highlighting one of our most important projects – LTS Futures. 👷♂️ We caught up with Construction Manager J Craig Henderson in Grangemouth. Craig’s constructing a hydrogen supply line which will feed a first ever live hydrogen trial of a local transmission system (LTS) pipeline in 2025. I am thrilled to see Louisiana leading the way in clean energy with the creation of the Clean Hydrogen Task Force through HCR64! This initiative marks a significant step toward establishing proactive clean hydrogen policies that will benefit our region for generations. I had the privilege to participate in the inaugural meeting, which Task Force Chairman Rep. Joseph A. Orgeron, Ph.D. did an outstanding job leading. He emphasized how critical future success will be defined by comprehensive and systematic energy transition. Great work by Lindsay Cooper getting it passed last session, and Stephen Wright representing Gulf States Renewable Energy Industries (GSREIA) during public comments, including Hy Stor Energy’s transformational projects. Louisiana, a longstanding leader in the energy sector, is spearheading crucial recommendations to grow the clean hydrogen industry. From production and storage to infrastructure and end-use, clean hydrogen is key to our energy diversification and sustainable industrial growth. With estimates at over $45.6 billion in clean energy investments and the creation of 23,000 new jobs, the region is poised for exponential growth in clean hydrogen demand. Louisiana is already a major hydrogen producer, and this initiative will only strengthen that position as a regional and global leader. Very proud to have led this newly published report over the past year on Hydrogen in Decarbonized Energy Systems, in collaboration with the Hydrogen Council. One of my own reflections on the analysis we did is that allowing electrolysis to operate freely within power markets really is the lowest cost means of deploying hydrogen. Provided markets have appropriate carbon pricing (as in EU), electrolyzers have all the incentive they need to contract power at times when the grid is less carbon intensive. The hydrogen economy can add dispatchable power to Texas’ electric grid operator, ERCOT. When compared to traditional unreinforced pipes, the TCP demonstrated a significant reduction in #hydrogen permeation, approximately tenfold, Strohm said. Strohm's Bart Steuten took the stage at the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference (OEEC) in November, where he gave a presentation about the production of hydrogen offshore, what we can expect in the future, the good sides of laying pipes instead of cables, as well as using pipes as storage.
