Erisco Foods PR Debacle: Lessons in Brand Crisis Mgt The crisis facing Erisco Foods is one that managers of brands at whatever level need to consciously learn from if they don’t want to have a brand that will become repulsive in disposition. What started simply as a product review has now, by tactless approach, metamorphoses into a full-blown brand disaster. In May 2004, De-United Foods (DUFIL) was faced with a worse situation. An allegation that Indomie Noodles was causing illness and death started making the rounds, driving fear into the minds of loyal consumers. The rumour was so intense that avid consumers and lovers of Indomie Noodles were convinced that the brand was killing across the length and breadth of Nigeria. The Management took time to reassure the public and her customers of the integrity of the production line and safety of the noodles brand. After thorough investigations, NAFDAC gave De-United Foods a clean bill of health. To reverse the trend, De-United Foods did a media round requesting for noodles from the batches that were alleged to be poisonous and ate them on live TV. De-United Foods were transparent in all of their approach and were able to resuscitate the love of Indomie Nigeria Noodles in the heart of her publics. The same tact should have been the approach of Erisco Foods in tackling the perceived negative product review they got from Mrs Chioma Egodi. Recently, Saturday, March 09, 2024, one @iam­­_temmyyy on X (formerly Twitter) posted what looked like a contaminated and adulterated Gino Tomato Paste. Makers of the product, @Ginonaija responded almost immediately with an apology, asking the customer to reach out immediately with contact details and the product batch number for instant redress. This is the basic that an organization should do to sustain their brand identity and equity. The Erisco Foods PR debacle provides several important lessons that companies can learn from. These include: The need for transparency in communication during a crisis. When your public start viewing you from the lens of lacking in transparency, the damage might be irreparable. Swiftness in crisis management, taking responsibility, and offering solutions. Evolving a strong corporate governance structure is essential for maintaining ethical standards and building trust with stakeholders. At the peak every customer relations endeavour should be customer satisfaction which is key driver of business success. Alway make room to adapt to market changes and seize opportunities from consumers feedbacks. Media and Public Perception plays a significant role in shaping the lens through which the public views a brand. Every crisis affords organization opportunity to learn from mistakes to improve on existing framework. One of the greatest undoing of businesses in our milieu is the lack of giving premium attention to image making. Money invested in PR and brand management is never a waste. The return on investment can never be quantified.
