On the fifth day of Christmas IPONZ gave to me - FIVE Geographical Indications, four registered designs, three process patents, two word marks and a Pohutukawa variety. A geographical indication identifies that a product comes from a particular place, and has a quality, reputation, or other characteristic essentially attributable to that location. The most famous geographical indication, proudly displayed on bottles sitting on many Christmas tables, is champagne. Only sparkling wine produced in the region Champagne, France, can call itself champagne. Bannockburn, Central Otago and Marlborough are all examples of New Zealand regions protected by geographical indications.
