Yesterday, for the first time since September 1983, I woke up not thinking about my job. I hit my “full-time career” finish line last Friday and that chapter has officially closed. BUT, it doesn’t mean that I’m actually retired, at least not fully so. Instead, my new chapter is quickly appearing to be what I term “discretionarily retired.” With too much energy to still still, can’t hit the gym, play golf or fly fish every day, I already know that there’s selective consulting and coaching ahead for me. Selective means carefully choosing the opportunities that match my key passions, maintain certain relationships and put my 40+ years of experience and expertise towards high level, strategic value for folks. It’s exciting to think I started as a consultant in 1983 and am now coming full circle. Just on a much more limited basis. My new website goes up later this month, marking that it’s not really retirement, it’s just not full-time anymore. After all, there still has to be time for the gym, golf and fly fishing, along with some fun travel, right?

This recommendation is truly the most powerful one I have ever received. It confirms that I made the right choice when I left my corporate job a year ago. Last month, my husband won the lottery.  "Oh wow, we can't cash this out." Those were the magical words at the gas station, sending us on a four-hour rollercoaster of "Are we millionaires?" and "What does this mean?" We always joke about documenting everything at work in case someone wins the lottery and quits. Well, guess what? Even with a lottery win, I wouldn't quit my job (My husband wasn't surprised; bless him!) I love what I do at Quandary Consulting Group and the people I work with. It's challenging, keeps me growing, and sparks genuine excitement. No, we aren't “quit-your-job-rich”, but we did win a little bit more than they can cash out at a gas station. Here's the real question: Would YOU quit your job if you won the lottery? Or are you already living the life you want? Quick update on my life since the lay-off, I started a new position at National General Insurance Company as a Bodily Injury Adjuster, working 100% remotely. 🎊 Finished up my first MBA course, Marketing Management. My professor was up-to-date on current market trends and gave us very hands-on experience. I participated in simulations where I stepped into the shoes of a CMO for a 3D-printing company. Analyzing KPIs like market valuation, expected average customer lifetime values, net promoter scores, and net income, where I was able to drive business growth by focusing on customer-centricity over a product-centric strategy. This week I am moving on to Statistical Foundations of Analytics. To those navigating the job market after a layoff, I hear you. It's tough out there - keep your head up. I know what it's like applying for countless positions and facing silence for what feels like ages. It's disheartening. But your worth isn't defined by a job title or the number of callbacks you receive. Keep pushing forward.

I comprehensively understood the intricacies of mental health conditions. I developed expertise in various techniques and therapeutic areas. Most importantly, I networked with top industry professionals. These skills were instrumental when I graduated from college. Without that invaluable experience at the hospital, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. 🚀 Getting hands-on experience and honing your skill set in the early stages can boost your career growth exponentially! The further I get into my career, the more I realise that you really can stand out from the crowd by being consistently kind and positive.

For most of us, it’s essential to strive to be the best worker we can be — to excel at our jobs. It’s not necessarily about impressing the supervisors and obtaining a promotion (though you may desire that down the road) — it’s more about having a sense of accomplishment for a job well done. Finally, remember that when you are the person that’s new to the job — or learning a new task — it’s always better to ask questions (even repeating the same ones until you fully understand the answer) than to proceed blindly and stumble so severely that you have no chance of recovering.
