I built a company because I couldn’t find the perfect shade of lipstick. The more I tried to find the right shade, the more I realized how elusive it was. Finding the perfect shade was challenging: 🔺Experiment with different brands 🔺Mix and match shades 🔺Never quite satisfied That’s when I knew something had to change. During my college days, keeping up with daily makeup routines took a toll on my skin. Back then, only chemically formulated makeup products were available, and they weren't suitable for long-term use. Finding the perfect shade for my skin tone was always a challenge. Fast forward to my career at Evogue Media LLP where I met Jasmin S Shah Together, we embarked on a journey to develop lipsticks that are not only healthy and multipurpose but also solve the challenge of finding the perfect shade. After two years of research and development, Karibo Cosmetics was born. This journey taught me a valuable lesson: you don't need to chase perfection, seriously. The more we try to perfect our products, the more we learn: ✅ Listen to customer feedback ✅ Adapt to market needs ✅ Innovate continually Our journey wasn't about following a strict formula; it was about embracing the process and learning along the way. “Products that can make you feel confident and beautiful in your skin should be a covered service.” Yes, this may sound crazy to my fellow home health clinicians who can hardly get basic fall prevention equipment covered but hear me out. People who experience sudden traumatic, life changing events often go through very dark times as they grapple with their new identities. They struggle with defining who they are and how they can feel like their old selves again despite the physical changes. This often leads to depression which manifests as a lack of motivation to participate in therapy... meaning insurance companies are paying for expensive rehab for a patient who isn’t emotionally ready to participate. As an occupational therapist, my job is to teach these patients self-care skills and to introduce adaptive equipment that can help them achieve independence again. Applying lipstick and eye makeup are the most difficult skills to regain with limited fine motor skills or significant tremor but are also 2 of the most common makeup skills people say would make them feel like their old selves again. “If I could just get some color on my lips or put some mascara on to look fresh and alive again, I’d feel so much better.” That’s why L'Oréal Beauty Tech Keynote by Nicolas HIERONIMUS Barbara Lavernos at #ces2024 resonated so deeply with me. Stephen Ewell HAPTA is a motion-stabilizing device that uses advanced sensors and motion-stabilizing technology to keep the makeup application device level, constantly adjusting to the user's position. And, it can be used for mascara application!! I love they believe in delivering beauty without barriers so that “anyone, anywhere should be able to participate in the beauty industry and have access to our products, devices and experiences.” Technology paired with an innovative, inclusive brand is now solving a problem that had no other workarounds. Thanks to L'Oréal this desire to look and feel like their old selves again is a wish clinicians everywhere will soon be able to grant their patients. Beauty Tech has nothing to do with superficial esthetic needs. It has to do with confidence and self esteem. It has to do with connecting with a deep part of yourself again and finally feeling like the old you for the first time since the accident. “Putting on makeup makes me feel better. It lifts my mood when I’m down.” Every time I don’t feel like myself, I get up and put on some makeup. It helps me release my stress and frustration, bringing out the best in me. The feeling of completion comes through makeup during those hard times because I finally have control over something, and the style I put on expresses who I am, who I want to be, and my best version. It's wonderful to see the beauty industry slowly but hopefully progressing in technology that better suits everyone. That sense of feeling is needed among everyone when they feel down.
