Merit’s passionate music teachers are some of the most experienced in Chicago. Parents and students alike say their teachers are what they value most about their Merit education. Music lovers come to Merit from every Chicago neighborhood (139 zip codes to be exact!) and background to learn together, dream together, teach each other, and broaden their horizons. For more than 40 years, they have been home to a diverse community of talented young musicians and have acted as a springboard for achieving full musical and personal potential. Thier passionate and experienced teaching artists provide access to high-quality music education, engaging over 2,500 students annually at the downtown location and in area schools and community centers. It's #TriviaTuesday and we're quizzing you on Cures Within Reach 💚 Cures Within Reach’s mission is to leverage the speed, safety, and cost-effectiveness of repurposing, testing already approved therapies for new diseases: driving more treatments to more patients more quickly. Their facilitated research has led to at least 21 treatments in use by patients today or funded for larger confirmatory clinical trials. Examples include projects repurposing both drugs and devices, and projects that impact patients with rare diseases and diseases in larger populations. Their focus is providing seed funds for proof-of-concept or pivotal studies that, when successful, allow a catalytic effect of follow-on funding for trials that build clinical evidence for regulatory approval or for off-label use. They take an impact philanthropy approach that prioritizes patients when selecting repurposing research projects. They support both philanthropic projects, which have little or no commercial value but have critical value to patients, as well as commercial projects, which the industry may bring to regulatory approval and then to market. For #PhilanthropyThursday we are highlighting Veterans Health Foundation For more than 90 years, VA clinicians have been improving the lives of Veterans and all Americans through health care discovery and innovation. VA Research is unique because of its focus on health and wellness issues that affect Veterans. Nested within the Veterans Health Administration—the nation’s largest health care system—VA Research is viewed by many experts as a model for rigorous, impactful research. Veterans Health Foundation and their partners have been able to bring fund 283 research projects, 5710 surgeries, 80 transplants, and more. Today especially, supporting veteran charities fosters a sense of patriotism and community. It encourages people to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday and the values of freedom, sacrifice, and unity. This can lead to a stronger, more connected community! Donating to veteran charities helps raise awareness about the ongoing needs of veterans. Many people are not fully aware of the struggles that veterans face after their service. Midtown-Metro operates through its Metro Achievement Center for girls and Midtown Achievement Center for boys in grades 3 – 12. Programs focus on Hispanic and African American youth, offering after-school and summertime growth opportunities that help students of average academic ability to achieve above-average results. They are rooted in Catholic moral and social teaching and embrace students regardless of their religious, racial, ethnic, or familial status. Midtown-Metro received its original inspiration from Opus Dei, an institution of the Catholic Church, and continues today its partnership with Opus Dei. They envision a city where at-risk children are hopeful and excited about their futures, and confident and capable of realizing their full potential in school and later in life. They build healthy and respectful interpersonal relationships with family and friends. They imagine a home life where parents in low-income communities, empowered with the knowledge and fortitude necessary to raise children in a challenging environment, take a lead role in their children’s education and holistic development. For #PhilanthropyThursday we are sharing Clearbrook's mission! Clearbrook empowers adults and children with intellectual/developmental disabilities to live their fullest lives possible. They’re proud of their deep expertise that spans six decades—allowing them to care for an array of unique needs. With a staff of 900+ and more than 80 locations across Chicagoland, Clearbrook is proud to report that 90 percent of every dollar raised goes directly into their programs and services. Clearbrook understands how challenging it can be to care for a loved one with a disability. Their Home-Based Services are tailored to provide eligible individuals and their families service and support in the comfort and familiarity of their home and community with a goal of achieving as much independence as possible. Clearbrook provides occupational, physical and speech therapy from licensed practitioners and assistants to aid in the treatment of individuals with developmental disabilities. Participants receive routine evaluations as well as ongoing individual therapy in private and group sessions which are integrated in the clients’ day program environments. For individuals who have incidences of behavior problems, Clearbrook will work with them to positively enhance their relationship with other people and their surrounding environment. Friends’ work spans the entire Chicago River system and its surrounding watershed. They focus on a greener river with healthy habitat, an accessible river that people can use and enjoy, and a river cared for by a broad group of supporters. Friends works in partnership with municipalities, businesses, community groups, schools, peer organizations, government agencies and individuals on projects that benefit the river.
