As my colleagues at ACCESS Health International embarked on this project I began to wonder why cardiovascular disease remains Asia's largest killer. We realized there were some misperceptions around CVD. First, many believe heart attacks, strokes, cardiac arrest and heart failure only affects those in old age. Second, that these conditions only affect wealthy or high-income populations in cities. Alarmingly we found that CVD also affects younger people and even those living in rural areas see higher rates of disease. Rural China and India have seen increased rates of CVD, while we see in several Southeast Asian countries younger people getting heart failure 10 years earlier than their Western counterparts. After scoping the policy gaps in CVD prevention, early detection, treatment and rehabilitation, and speaking to several patients and healthcare professionals, I'm pleased we've released this full report calling for more cohesive action to: 👉 Reduce premature deaths 👉 Reduce hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations 👉 Slow growth in new patients. We can accomplish these objectives by working together cohesively across the Asia-Pacific to unite patients, healthcare professionals, academia, nonprofits and other key stakeholders together.

The European Chronic Disease Alliance (ECDA) is a coalition of 13 European health organisations sharing the same interests in combating preventable chronic diseases through European policies that impact health. ECDA represents millions of chronic disease patients and over 200 000 health professionals. We are committed to reversing the alarming rise in chronic diseases by providing leadership and policy recommendations based on contemporary evidence. Through providing policy recommendations based on contemporary evidence, raising awareness by engaging with policy-makers, promoting the development and implementation of an EU Framework on Chronic Disease, and developing and publishing position/policy papers. Through are actions, we are driven to make a better life for the millions of Europeans who live with chronic diseases.
