Tunisia's decision to forego coal and nuclear power in 2016 and 2023 was a major blunder. Had the country stuck to its original energy mix, it could have controlled energy costs and achieved energy independence. This mistake has come at a high price. Today, Tunisia is dependent on not one, but two sources of energy: natural gas and imported electricity from Algeria. The Tunisian government must take steps to revise its current energy transition plan, which calls for 35% renewable energy by 2030. The new transition plan must be more ambitious and meet the needs of citizens, who want lower tariffs and reliable electricity.
