Scouting time is so important for planning architectural photos. Whether it's an advance scout or done on the day of the shoot, the scouting time allows you to look at different angles and features of the location to think through the best options and ideally take some test shots and review them with the client. I scouted this location while the construction was nearing completion, several weeks before the move-in was complete. We were able to identify key areas to cover inside and coordinate with the city departments in advance for access. For this photo, the idea was to use the interior lights to accent prominent features of the building at sunset. I planned this shot to be at sunset because the building faces northwest which would give light on the face of the building. I also wanted to have the interior lights on in the upstairs conference room and downstairs lobby to emphasize the dynamic center section with all the windows. By combining bracketed exposures, I was able to get the balance between interior and exterior lighting that I wanted.
