The New York City Department of Correction (#Rikers) is being considered for federal takeover by a court-appointed receiver and one of the primary reasons has been the Commissioner’s inability to reform the place for the better. Plaintiffs have argued that the Corrections union (COBA) has too much power over Commissioners and hold the department back from reform; and that a receiver is a solution to this problem. This article explores how COBA’s newest contract allowed COBA to continue to wield its power over the Department and ignore certain federal court orders. FSF Partner, former head of internal affairs at Rikers, @sarenatee is quoted as saying: “This contract is proof-positive that COBA executives run the Department of Correction and have the power to sway DOC policy; shamefully, they only wield that power to protect their own rather than the membership at large or the detainees condemned to Rikers Island. Receivership is desperately needed in order to bring order and reform to Rikers. No Commissioner has been, or will ever be, able to trump the power of the unions.” https://lnkd.in/emPd-5DH #rikersisland #lawyers #lawyersofinstagram #suits #newyorkcity #newyorkstate

It's a very political King's Speech. Isn't that what we all think? The opening of Parliament in the final furlong before a general election is both politics and pageantry. As someone working in public affairs I'm always likely to over-interpret events as being 'political.' Who knew?! However, I think there is something under-weighted in the analysis: what a government can actually get done just before an election. Are there deals with backbenchers or powers ministers can wield without requiring full legislative scrutiny? The necessity to 'get things done' before time runs out can breed unlikely alliances borne out of desire to deliver before it is too late. For example, the Digital Economy Act of 2010 was pushed through thanks to a cross-party and industry effort just before Gordon Brown Labour ceded power. Making rules in haste isn't always the best recipe for good policy making and today's fractious politics may not lend itself to compromise. However, it is worth looking out for the decisions made in government departments and regulators than create powerful rules for industry sectors. They may not be the most eye-catching news on the opening day of Parliament. But they are highly consequential and what many of us work on in the years to come! #kingsspeech #politics #government #election

The peaceful transition of power is the bedrock of American democracy. Today marks the third anniversary of J6, a day where a former disgraced president stoked an insurrection at our nation’s Capitol, with the sole purpose of blowing our bedrock tradition to bits. Make no mistake about it - J6 was planned, thousands from across America participated, and people died as a result. But just because they failed doesn’t mean we should forget. The events of that day underscored the importance of protecting our democratic values. They underscore the importance of supporting leaders who will protect and defend our democracy. This year we will vote in the most crucial election of our lifetimes. We must choose candidates who protect democracy or we will get those who will jeopardize it. #ProtectDemocracy #DemocracyOnTheBallot #January6

Banning the extraction of peat: surely that fruit is hanging at ankle-level. There are plentiful alternatives for horticulture. You can argue that banning it wouldn’t contribute *much* to climate targets, but it would contribute some. And the impact on the unique biodiversity in peatlands is undeniable. This argument must be about 30 years old. How many livelihoods depend on peat?

In the last two months, Rishi Sunak has "scrapped" policies that didn't even exist (e.g. meat tax) ...and is now proposing legislation that is not legally required to do what he says he wants to do (e.g. on oil & gas licences) But come the General Election, he will no doubt argue that there hasn't been "enough parliamentary time" to deliver on the long list of environmental promises made by the The Conservative Party but not yet delivered (e.g. banning #peat sales) https://lnkd.in/e-Vxkisu

Decaying facilities sign of failing rule of law The concept of a developmental state to promote progress in society will remain a myth, a pipe dream, for as long as bureaucrats are driven by self interest, and not the wellbeing of society. The last half of the 30 years of our democracy has increasingly shown us a pattern in which the value of state stock was allowed to diminish through allowing vandalism to persist without the culprits being punished. Why this trend has been allowed to fester as fast as it has given a well-oiled functioning state with the police and military on guard is the question this […]
