Waitrose welcomes further Small Beer innovation! Felix James and I took this picture in the Summer of 2020, an incredibly proud moment as Small Beer Brew Co. landed on the shelves of more than 160 Waitrose stores across the country. Waitrose & Partners stood true to their values of supporting independent, sustainably-minded British producers. Embracing our mid-strength beer category innovation and front-footing the rapidly changing consumer environment and their customer's relationship with alcohol. It's a relationship that has continued to blossom with Waitrose being able to cater to a customer base who are shopping more mindfully than ever. At Small Beer we're not seeing consumers wanting to forego the social occasion, but we know that many (ourselves very much included) are more conscious about the impacts of alcohol on us personally and professionally. This May we exclusively launched our Small Beer Stout across 200 stores, grew distribution of Small Beer Lager to more than 200 stores and developed our Small Beer Pale pack size proposition, increasing it from single bottle to 6packs. It continues to be a great pleasure to work with a retailer whose values align with our own. Today, let's dive into the fascinating story of the Beer Pub Monopolies in Britain, also known as the "tied house system." 💡 Did you know that pubs were owned by brewer/landlords and were obligated to buy beer from those landlords? In the 1980s, six vertically integrated brewing companies dominated the marketplace, leading to the shift to pub companies with high levels of corporate debt but tremendous buying power. But in 1989, the Monopolies and Mergers Commission decided that a few major brewers had too much power over the UK's pub industry, leading to the "Beer Orders" which forced large breweries to either sell their brewery business or their pubs. The chicken segment is one of the most dynamic and competitive among the large restaurant chains in the U.S. The eleven leading chains account for more than $40 billion in annual sales. Chick-fil-A is the clearest success story, moving its market share from 30% (among the leading eleven players) ten years ago to close to 50%. And this is not the only success story in the segment, especially in the last few years. Growing the top-line while also strengthening the brand can be challenging, but the leading companies work based on plans and strategies that start with a long-term vision and think every component of the business based on where they want to be in two, five, ten years, and more. #restaurants #growth #chicken

After so many years, the industry has finally acknowledged market saturation, after the hazy craze and its fallout (eg. milkshake IPAs, slushy beers) there’s been lack of real innovation on styles to bring new consumers which brought brewers back to classic styles in an effort to keep people engaged; with a higher focus on “better for you” products (non-alc & low abv) and a rise of Agave spirits popularity driven mostly by celebrity brands the market has gone thru an interesting diversification, making consumers more conscious on their purchase decisions. After the chaos on 2020-2021 the craft beer industry is facing its first real challenge in a while; not caused only by their own market conditions but also by the current economic uncertainty and real estate constrains, forcing some brands to close, other to rethink their business model and the least to increase their budgets to drive more volume. There’s never been a better time to unite as an industry and collaborate on new branding strategies, reconsider the “gipsy brewery” model and open collective brewhouses for smaller brands to keep their operations.

Granola Bowl Effect 🍚 People only see the simplicity of an offer on the outside but what they don’t see is what that’s made of, the effort, the energy and the resilience that’s required to create and grow. As I sit in the beautifully designed Elio cafe in Mailbox, Birmingham. Now as a customer I’ve just sat here, ordered and paid for a granola bowl but let’s look at the process of how this granola bowl got here. Something so simple yet so much effort was required. So first there was an idea by an individual to open the cafe, he had to negotiate the rent and then spend money on the fit out and the design, he had to trial and error the menu which required staff and training. The blueberries came from Chile, Poland or France where someone was picking them out, packaging, selling and transporting them. The granola arrived from food manufactures, the bananas from Africa and the peanut butter from Manchester and the yogurt from UK or Europe. The list goes on but when speaking to business owners try and understand the struggle they face, it’s hard to sometimes acknowledge the amount of things that go on behind the scenes to present a beautifully presented offering. And from a different perspective as business owners it’s easy to look at the finish line of our business journeys but it’s time we acknowledge and look after the ingredients that make it so amazing. #FoodForThought #MindsetMondays
