January’s Joyful, Playful Pause Like the moment separating the ride up a rollercoaster and the abrupt, swift ride down the rollercoaster, early January is that moment of stillness on top of the ride. That still moment can easily stretch itself out for a week or two each January before momentum takes it all away again. Every January is a new beginning, new year, new canvas, new adventures, new accomplishments, new challenges, new people to meet, new places to go. Early January is not at all like the Race of Summer in between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. That Race of Summer has no time to dawdle. Like an auto race with its green flag to start the race, the white flag for one more lap, and the checkered flag for the winner, the Race of Summer needs to start very quickly, and on time! Summer weather, sunshine, fashions, BBQs, and vacations will not wait — there is no time to waste! However, there is always a little extra time in early January to daydream deeper about the upcoming year. Athletes have a word for this daydreaming – they call it previsualization. Think about those daring winter skiers who race down slippery mountains in between gates, jumps, and turns. While one racer is jumping in the air a few feet above the starting gate to provide themselves a few more feet of gravity as they start their run, other skiers behind them are closing their eyes and swaying their bodies to match the layout of the upcoming race. Trouble getting out the door to run? 🏃 Maybe the barrier is mental and not physical. Sometimes we build things up in our head so much that the activation energy required to get started is too high. What does it take to get out running? Arguably running shoes and that’s it! If you are just starting out and building a habit, don’t worry so much about making things perfect (e.g. the perfect running shoes, having the perfect running plan, the perfect playlist). Just get out and run! We can worry about the details later. Want to live the part? Just start!

One of my favorite moments from the ski trip I just took with my family wasn't where I expected it to be. It wasn't cruising down the mountain or the view from the top. It happened when we were waiting in line to get on the ski lift--this is usually the worst part, the thing we endure to get to the fun stuff. This time, one of the other people in line turned it into a wonderful moment. He threw a snowball. And then another one. And then another. He didn't throw it at his friends. He tossed it to the back end of the line, at people he couldn't even see. Then, someone threw a snowball back at him. Neither snowball hit the intended target, which made it even better. Because now there were four people involved. Surprise turned into laughter--until you got hit by a snowball and then it was personal! The line turned into a snowball fight. See the video for a brief moment in the fight--I couldn't capture more because I had snowballs to throw! :) Why am I sharing this? I think there are two lessons we can learn: 1. Don't assume that the boring part of your customer experience has to stay boring. Find a way to add fun. Think about how Disney has made the queue experience fun. Or how Apple has made the package opening a cool experience. 2. When someone surprises you with something fun, lean into it and do more. The key to this great moment was not actually the person who threw the snowballs. It was the person who threw them back. One guy throwing snowballs is a class clown showing off. Two people throwing them at each other is a snowball fight. Celebrate the surprises in your life. You might find one of your favorite moments in an unlikely place.
