There have been many moments on my cancer journey that have been a challenge. Today has been the opposite as my daughter and I joined The Atlantic's #PeopleVsCancer. While cancer has taken quite a bit from me (like a 1/3rd of my colon and a 1/5th of my right lung), it's given Alexis Rozen a clear purpose in life. She's a rising #biomedicalengineering student at Cornell University and working this summer at the American Cancer Society with the patient support and early detection teams. I'm reminded everyday, nearly every hour, of my cancer. While I could focus on all the negative aspects, I chose to focus on the positive. And nothing is more positive, more meaningful than seeing first hand your child's intention. My cancer has given my daughter a purpose that is deep and powerful. #powerofpositivity 👊

Dearest Douglas I am so proud of your beautiful daughter like she was my own. Good on her for taking this painful challenge and channeling its energy for your and the world’s betterment .. I am with you in this battle as I am now celebrating the blessing of hitting the 10 year mark since the bilateral mastectomy. As one thriver to another, I want to share something small that a guru said to me when i spoke of “my cancer” she immediately interrupted me and said to me say “the cancer” not “my cancer” and this goes to all the challenges we face. With much love and gratitude I will leave you with these two mindset and language shifts that have helped me through my journey… 1: We don’t just survive we Thrive 2: Cancer doesn’t go into remission it is defeated into submission and now 3: it’s not “our cancer” or it’s just “the cancer” Blessing to you, Blessings to your daughter, blessings to me to my girls and to all the people and all living beings…

Douglas Rozen I'm so sorry I didn't realize you were there as well - would have LOVED to have finally met you. Your beautiful words about purpose and how pain can inspire it - both in us and in those we love - resonated deeply. Alexis Rozen, I just followed you here. I am a metastatic breast cancer thriver and patient advocate - if I can ever be helpful to you in your studies/career please don't hesitate to reach out.

Douglas Rozen as a dad of three daughters who have only known me as a survivor, I know deep down the impression it left/will leave on them. Alexis, your empathy and commitment to making a difference will surely bring comfort and hope to many. The world certainly needs more people like you! With admiration and best wishes!
