The Moral Compass of Medicine Doctors navigate a complex ethical tightrope. Their decisions hold immense power, often hovering between life and death. A strong conscience, therefore, becomes an essential tool. History offers stark lessons from those who strayed from the path. A Betrayal of Trust: Dr. James Marion Sims, a 19th-century gynecological pioneer, conducted experimental surgeries on enslaved women without anesthesia. These barbaric practices, disguised as medical advancements, inflicted immense pain and trauma. Similarly, Dr. John Bodkin Adams, a mid-20th century British doctor, was later exposed as a serial killer. He prescribed lethal doses of narcotics to elderly patients, often his beneficiaries, for financial gain. These cases exemplify the devastating consequences when a doctor prioritizes personal gain over patient safety. Dr. Josef Mengele, a physician in Nazi Germany, serves as another chilling example. He used his medical expertise for horrific human experimentation on concentration camp prisoners, showcasing the immense suffering that can occur when a conscience is absent. Champions of Morality: Thankfully, history also celebrates doctors who championed their moral compass. Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis defied established practices, advocating for handwashing and dramatically reducing childbirth mortality rates. Dr. Alice Hamilton, a trailblazer in industrial toxicology, tirelessly fought for worker safety regulations despite pressure from industry. These examples demonstrate the power of conscience to drive positive change in medical practice. As Stephen Covey emphasizes in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a strong conscience is crucial for continuous improvement. It guides us to challenge the status quo and advocate for what's right, even when faced with resistance. On Doctor's Day, let's celebrate the countless doctors who, like Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis and Dr. Alice Hamilton, prioritize their conscience, making a world of difference for their patients. What is medicine?

Dear medical professionals and students, As individuals providing medical care, it's important to recognize the impact of bias on patient treatment. By acknowledging our own biases, we can take action to identify and address any potential upstream causes. Failing to do so can lead to unintentional but harmful discrimination and ultimately result in poor patient outcomes.  There are three common types of biases: cognitive, cultural, and systemic. Cognitive biases stem from mental shortcuts and the way our brains process information; cultural biases arise from stereotypes and prejudices; and systemic biases manifest in our institutions and organizations. Each has the potential to negatively affect care and warrants our attention.   At the International Chair in Bioethics, we recognize that bias awareness is crucial in providing quality care and ensuring justice and equity in healthcare. By being mindful of the various types of biases that exist and taking proactive measures to challenge them, we can better serve our patient populations. Fortunately for Jai Park - the 20-year-old character whose seizure while driving led to a car accident, hospitalization, and search for the most appropriate long-term antiepileptic medication regimen - interprofessional teamwork eliminated his predisposed risk of developing SJS.
