Food systems encompass the entire range of actors and their interlinked value-adding activities involved in the production, aggregation, processing, distribution, consumption, and disposal of food products that originate from agriculture, forestry, or fisheries, and parts of the broader economic, societal, and natural environments in which they are embedded.

It’s good to see new figures showing that Australian food and fibre production will remain high - $86 billion worth in 2023-24 - even as we move towards drier conditions. Well done to all who work in our agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries.

Agrifood Systems interventions are pivotal in preventing and mitigating the climate crisis: Smallholder farmers need to adopt climate smart resilient varieties and practices of modern farming to foster biodiversity.This will aid in reducing the carbon footprint. Emphasis should be put on managing of food waste to reduce the amount of carbon released in form of methane. Using proper land use management systems such as minimum tillage, planting cover crops and Agroforestry will come in handy in conserving the SOC(Soil Organic Carbon). Adoption of mitigation measures in 'blue carbon ecosystems' such as planting mangroves to help sequester the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The question is: What existing frameworks can we leverage on in employing a holistic approach in combating the climate crisis menace?
