International Youth Day (IYD) is an awareness day designated by the United Nations that takes place on August 12.The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world. THREE LESSONS FROM COMMUNITY BUILDING IN BALI 🇮🇩 To My Sisters had such a great time on our last retreat with Sorted Chale. Whilst it was incredibly fun, it was also incredibly moving and inspirational for the women who attended. Here are some of the important lessons we learned about our personal and professional journeys. 💥 Taking risks are NECESSARY: Going to Bali was an act of faith, and many of the women who decide to come on a TMS retreat are taking a significant mental, emotional and physical risk by investing in 'strangers'. Yet, the risks always allow us the most growth and pay-off, and we managed to build long-lasting friendships and sisterhood which outlasted the trip. 🛌 Rest and recovery or not 'nice-to-haves' but MANDATORY: Rest should not be a 'treat' but an intentional practice to enable you to show up as your best self. Too many of us see rest as something that is optional. We NEED sleep, rest and reflective time to ward off burn out. 💡 Start how you intend to maintain: The values, principles and vision myself and my co-founder stated in the beginning, remain the same three years later. We may have iterated in delivery and mechanisms, but what we found tied everyone together was a shared sense of belonging, understanding, and kinship. There are two paths in human life — Pravritti, the path of action and progress and Nivritti, the path of inward contemplation and spiritual perfection. Through Pravritti, a welfare society is established by improving the economy and political systems. Progress in society necessarily implies concerted efforts of its people. Through Nivritti, a value-oriented life is achieved, which is based on the inner spiritual dimensions of humanity.

What does wellbeing look like for Asian young people? Is it the same as the Western model of wellbeing that society often prescribes? How does living in a collective family structure interact with an individualistic school system and society? How does a young person find their place in New Zealand society, especially when the dominant culture might not fully grasp the nuances of being an Asian youth? I have spoken to many Asian youths who shared their experiences of growing up between two societies. They often felt they were neither "mainstream" enough nor "Asian" enough, a dilemma that significantly impacted their self-image and sense of belonging. One young person mentioned that she frequently felt the need to assess her surroundings to decide whether to adopt a more mainstream or Asian approach. Placing such a heavy burden on young people is unfair; society should foster a healthy dialogue and offer adult support to facilitate understanding of their experiences. Unfortunately, these complexities are often difficult for them to articulate, even into adulthood. Asian Family Services invites you to come and share your experiences with us.
