Today is #UHCDay 2023! Ever wondered what UHC stands for? Universal health coverage, or UHC, means that all people receive quality health services that meet their needs, when and where they need them, without being exposed to financial hardship in paying for the services. The achievement of UHC is a key objective outlined in the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs adopted by countries worldwide in 2015. It is such an important goal that it even has its own day: 12 December is universal health coverage day. On this UHC Day 2023, we call on governments and development actors to invest in strengthening public health systems. A well-funded public health system reduces inequalities, removes barriers to health services, improves access to medicines and strengthens our ability to be prepared for and respond to health emergencies.
