Omission of axillary surgery in locally advanced breast cancer. Latest findings from the #SENOMAC trial further indicate this possibility. In addition to the results from previous #ACOSOG_Z0011 and #AMAROS trials, SENOMAC design filled the gap with inclusion of a large sample size, inclusion of various groups (T1-T3; older age patients), and inclusion of patients with macro-metastases. This trial provides robust evidence that the omission of completion axillary-lymph-node dissection is safe in patients with clinically node-negative T1-T3 breast cancer and 1-2 sentinel-node macro-metastases who received adjuvant systemic treatment and radiation therapy according to national guidelines. #Breast_cancer #SENOMAC #Axillary_dissection https://lnkd.in/gB7ds922

The main results from CLOCS show that purchases of pain and indigestion medication were detected up to 8 months prior to diagnosis for ovarian cancer patients compared with controls. February is #OesophagealCancerAwarenessMonth. We recently caught up with David Chuter, who is an oesophageal cancer survivor and Patient Advocate on #CancerGrandChallenges team eDyNAmic. In 2006, Dave was diagnosed with and treated for oesophageal-gastro cancer adenocarcinoma at the junction of the oesophagus and stomach. At the time, there was no support network through which he could connect with other patients, so he co-founded the OG Support Group with his medical team. It facilitates both virtual and face-to-face meetings in the UK for oesophageal cancer patients. Currently, the only “cure” for oesophageal cancer is surgery to remove the oesophagus and all or most of the stomach. Only 30% of patients are at an early stage where surgery is possible, and 70% of patients go straight in palliative or end of life care. eDyNAmiC's work is incredibly important to Dave — especially as he's starting to see the potential of research crossing over to the clinical side to ultimate help identify those at risk, support better treatments and potentially save lives. Breast cancer management takes different approaches depending on physical and biological characteristics of the disease, as well as the age, over-all health and personal preferences of the patient. Treatment types can be classified into local therapy (surgery and radiotherapy) and systemic treatment (chemo-, endocrine, and targeted therapies). Local therapy is most efficacious in early stage breast cancer, while systemic therapy is generally justified in advanced and metastatic disease, or in diseases with specific phenotypes. Historically, breast cancer was treated with radical surgery alone. Advances in the understanding of the natural course of breast cancer as well as the development of systemic therapies allowed for the use of breast-conserving surgeries, however, the nomenclature of viewing non-surgical management from the viewpoint of the definitive surgery lends to two adjectives connected with treatment timelines: adjuvant (after surgery) and neoadjuvant (before surgery). #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

The annual Multidisciplinary Symposium @GatorCME provides a multidisciplinary overview of the diagnosis and treatment of all stages of breast cancer. Dr. Alastair Thompson, Professor and Chief, Section of Breast Surgery @bcmhouston, discussed the importance of gathering all available information, including molecular data on tumor biology, to make informed treatment decisions for ductal carcinoma in situ (#DCIS) patients. Dr. Thompson highlighted a study published in @JournalCancer demonstrating the #DCISionRT test was prognostic for risk and predicted radiation therapy (RT) benefit for DCIS patients.
